The Ford Bronco was designed to take on the Jeep CJ5 and the International Scout in the relatively new recreational 4-wheel drive market. The Bronco proved to offer more versatile than the Jeep and Scout. Its roominess and interior configuration offered much more utility than the Jeep and the driveline and gear ratios gave the Bronco a clear advantage over the Scout. When introduced in 1966 as a rugged, simple and economical compact SUV, the Bronco became an instant hit... with the American public and soon became known for having many utility type uses as well as superior off road capability. It is powered by a 347 V8 that started out as a 5.0 block from a 1990s Ford Explorer with a roller cam, roller rockers, Edelbrock aluminum heads, Edelbrock aluminum intake. It has 10:1 compression and runs on premium fuel. The transmission is a 3 speed column shift automatic from Hughes Racing. The Bronco runs and shifts very well. There is a Dana 44 in the front with a 9 inch rear end with Detroit lockers in the front and rear. The Bronco has had the tie-rod over conversion which allows greater ground clearance.
