Description for Ford F-100 1968
For sale: 1968 Ford F100 Custom 4x4 dry western truck. I bought this truck from a local towing and recovery company, they pulled it out of storage as part of an estate. I am researching the history on it, what is known so far is that the owner was a wealthy older man that had a home in Arizona and a cabin in the mountains here in western Montana. The truck was built at San Jose and was assigned to the Phoenix district sales office. It was purchased new in the southwest, lived it's early life in Arizona and California, then was driven up to Montana to be used as a cabin truck. It is equipped with what appears to be the factory Thermactor smog system that is still working and intact. The vintage "green window" Gem Top shell is included, and comes with the key to lock the rear hatch. Truck still has the factory radio block off plate. Mileage shows 89k, and overall wear on the truck is consistent with that mileage. I putted around with it this summer, mostly for dump runs and to lunch with the guys. Truck has just the right look and garners a lot of interest, prepare to be mobbed at the gas station or coffee shop. I'll do my best to describe it below, please see additional detail pics including underside at linked Photobucket album and YouTube video.
Exterior: Driver quality, nice patina, looks good from 20 feet. Truck was repainted at some point in the original Wimbledon white, an inexpensive job, and a few areas have been touched up with a spray can. WILL NEED PAINT if you want a show truck, okay as is for a driver. Front clip and passenger door appear to have been replaced when it was repainted. Glass is good, body is tight, and doors close like a bank vault. Pretty straight old truck, there is a dent low in passenger door, and one above exhaust pipe on driver side. Two smaller dings in hood and back of cab on passenger side. Tailgate is bent and has a spot where filler is cracking. Truck is dry and has never seen salt, no exterior rust through, this truck has none of the dreaded box seam or hood hinge area issues, there is surface rust on box floor - see pics in linked Photobucket album. Also a spot at bottom of passenger fender where a rust hole(from mud holding moisture) was repaired with filler. Inside of box is dented and dinged from hauling firewood. Underside rust is minimal, a few spots on floors and driver side cab drop off. Cab mounts look good. I sprayed on a converter product, but nothing is covered up or hidden with undercoat. What you see is what you get. Topper has been repainted and looks nice, some of the windows are scratched but they are plexiglas, and shouldn't be difficult to replace. Nice enough looking truck that it will garner accolades at Cars N Coffee, Home Depot, or Steak N Shake.
Interior: Original, clean and presentable enough for a driver or work truck. Dash is cracked on passenger side, see pics. Headliner is good. A few tears in original beige seat upholstery, and some seat springs are broken. Glass is good, windows roll up and down and doors lock. As far as I know, everything works - lights, all gauges, tach, heater, wipers, parking brake, etc. Heater blower motor squeaks sometimes when you first turn it on. Original floor mat is torn on passenger side as shown. Presents well enough to have some character without looking ratty.
Mechanical: Starts, runs, and drives, and stops fine. Manual steering and brakes, as was typical of trucks of this era. Original 360 runs smooth and strong. No noises or smoke. Does have a cracked exhaust manifold that will tick till it warms up. New dual exhaust. Shifts fine and 4x4 works. I had the truck checked over by a professional mechanic and he found no major issues. Complete service was done including oil change and fluids topped off. Fuel was drained, filters replaced and carb rebuilt. Auxiliary fuel tanks are disconnected and it's running off the main tank. There is a hint of gear whine, but can't hear it over the howl of the deep lug tires. Vintage Rhino winch spins freely, but the Chelsea PTO cable appears stuck and won't engage. Lift blocks were added under front springs to offset the weight of the winch. Vintage "pie crust" bias ply traction tires have great tread but are pretty old, I haven't driven it much over 60mph due to that fact. Has some of the typical old 4x4 leaks, one from transfer case and one from PTO. Will leave spots on garage floor. These era Ford trucks are anvil-tough and pretty much indestructible(think Mr Majestyk), however old trucks do need work from time to time, so if you haven't messed with vintage vehicles, adjust your expectations accordingly.
Pricing/Misc: If you're looking for a minty creampuff, this probably isn't your truck. If you're looking for a fun old truck to putt around in and/or restore, this might be your ride. 67-72 Ford trucks are listed as one of the top ten future collectible vehicles by Hagerty and others. If you've been watching, you know they bring strong money. This truck is NO RESERVE and will sell. Title is clear and in my name. Truck runs and drives, but flying in and driving it home isn't really advisable, as Montana is a huge and remote state with poor cell coverage. Truck can stay here for 30 days after auction end, after that $100 per month storage will be due. Buyer needs to bind coverage on the truck as I will cancel my insurance upon sale.
Please check with your wife and banker before bidding. If you win this auction, you own the truck, and need to pay for it per the terms below. Thank you!
