Description for Ford V-Eight 1950
1950 Ford Club CoupeOriginal California SurvivorBuilt in Richmond CaliforniaPurchased in 1965 from senior ownerOriginal Hawthorne Green respray in 1984Retired to private collection 54 years agoNO RESERVE
When it comes to vintage automobiles, California and the West Coast of the United States have always been the most desirable the world over for many reasons; the mild climate and the fact that many automotive trends started in California. The automobile is the perfect technological symbol of American culture, a tangible expression of our quest to level space, time, and class and a reflection of our relentless mobility, social and otherwise. You see automobiles advertised the world over described as California cars because at some point they were in California or drove through California. A true California car is one that was sold new in California and titled in California, one that has the original plates that are on that title is a true California car.We are liquidating a collection of 300 actual California cars.
We have a 1950 Ford Club Coupe V8 in Hawthorne built in the East Bay town of Richmond California and first sold in Oakland to a German immigrantwith the last nameofMesserschmittwho in 1965 worked at the local hardware store in the little village of Montclair in Oakland California.Mr Messerschmitt took exceptional care of the Coupe with military like maintenance, his pride of ownership of the ( at the time 16 year old car) so impressed the current owners father who was a huge fan of the Ford V8 that he made him an offer he could not refused and became the only other owner this California classic over half a century ago. at that time he retired the car to his private collection. The car had an oil change in 1965 with miles and in 1984 the oil was changed again and the car was driven 600 miles to where it is today. This car has themandatoryblack 1963 plates with the last sticker "1965" the last time it was registered for the road54 years ago. This particular example is a true California survivor in every sense of the word the "vin" number#BORH159928 which shows the first two digits (B0) as the powerful 100 hp V8 option, the next (RH) is for Richmond California Ford motor company assembly plant. The remaining break down of the vin is the sequential production number. The Richmond Ford plant wasdesigned by Albert Kahn which when built was the largest assembly plant measuring over 500,000 square feet to be built on the West Coast. It was a major force in the conversion to wartime production during World War II and with it being located at the base of San FranciscoBay with it's deep water pier next to the famed Richmond ship yards, the building was used in the Francis Ford Coppola movie Tucker the man and his dream and is now the Rosie the Riveter museum. The Eight model signified the exclusive use of V8 power under the hood.In the collector car world we all hear a lot about original California cars the world over for being the most desirable because of factors such as the mild climate with out snow or salted roads. What you rarely hear about is original California vehicles that are nearly 8 decades old. That is something you just don't see to often so common sense would dictate this particular example would be quite difficult to duplicate. Because of the strong interest in customizing these ShoeBox Fords to find one in it's pure stock form is more difficult than finding one that'sbeen modified, stock two-door models may be the most difficult to find. The all new 1949,1950 and 1951 Ford'swere hot when new, and remain a must for any serious collection. This original California original 1950 Ford Club Coupe is possibly the most original stock example in existenceanywhere in the world. This is another unique opportunityto own an iconic symbol of the very start of the California custom car culture in the early 1950's . The post war Fords were a fresh new look that was extremelypopular.
EXTERIOR : This car's exterior is as close to flawless as you will find, the car has been always stored indoors everyday of its life since 1965. In and around 1984 the original Hawthorne Green was resprayed and is like show quality. Please look it over in detail and tell me where you see any flaws, I would be happy to go over it in detail, this is a real car. Which is something that can't be said for most 69 year old vehicles. The chrome is beautiful it is a solid California car with no previous collisiondamage and driven very infrequentlybut when it was driven it was dry and free of snow. I would venture to say this particular example built in the San Francisco Bay Area and has been solelyin the Bay Area has never encounteredsnow. The car was professionallyrepainted 35 years ago because the old paint was fading, it has never been out side a day in its life since 1976. The car has driven a total of 200 miles since 1965. This car is best described as a low mileage California car as it has traveledabout 200 miles in the last 54 years. It is amazing when a car is stored in a climate controlled indoor space how things like rubber aroundwindow can still looking new if never exposedto the elements. This is a very clean car that is atime capsule of California history
Mechanically: This car has traveled a total of 60630 miles in 69 years which averages out to about 878 miles a year which is quite unique in itself. She is powered by the famous Ford Flathead putting out 100 horsepower. It is amazing to me why everyone didn'tbuy a V8 back in 1950. This 24 bolt 239 ci Flathead V8 is an engineeringmarvel and wonderful to see one running so well that is original. She purrs like a switch watch, the car was driven to the photo shoot on Alameda Island. Please dont assume you will fly in and drive this nearly 70 year old car to Canada, she has old tires and last on the road 54 years ago. With that said she runs great the low mile flathead runs as close to perfect as you will find. Each and every 1950 Ford car that was built had a 3 speed manual transmission but not everyone had the optional overdrive transmission. The transmission pulls great in every gear like a low mile one should. This car has no known issues, we replaced the fuel pump with a new one and she drives the same way she did went pulled off the road in 1965. The car had the oil changed in 1965 with 59k on it, the odometer works and shows 60200 miles. While taking the pictures we let the car run and idle, it did not overheat or link any fluids. I was expectinga squeaking belt or an old hose start to leak, the only thing that stopped working was the drivers headlight. This is an amazing example.INTERIOR: The interior of this car is anything short of amazing, like the rest of the car it is a time capsule . Aswas the custom of the day many people would cover there brand new furniture in plastic to keep it nice for the future. What I am finding is in the early 50's people did that with new cars as well as I have two completelydifferent 1950 automobiles that are sellingthat both have been covered from new as told by original owners to the father of the present owner. It should be like new underneath. the present owner has no intention of taking them off but the seats NO GUARANTEES but they seats should be brand new underneath as they have been covered from day one. I see no reason as they look great the red is bright and looks new. The contrast of the interior and exterior is striking. A true classic with the good engine and tranny combo that looks new. The art deco design dashboard all new for 1950 is a work of art never to be duplicated again. Starting with the original headliner which is in near perfect condition to all the door panels with beautiful accents that look as they did in 1950. The gauges and handles are all fresh and new looking as a work of art that has been sealed in a vault exactly the way it was in1965

HISTORICALLYSIGNIFICANT :Itwas the first all-new automobile design introduced by the big threeafter World War II, civilian production having been suspended during the war, and the 1946-1948 models from Ford, GM, and Chrysler being updates of their pre-war models. Popularly called the "Shoebox Ford" for its slab-sided, "ponton" design, the 1949 Ford is credited both with saving Ford and ushering in modern streamlined car design with changes such as integrated fenders and more. This design would continue through the 1951 model year,
