Description for Ford F-1 Pickup 1951
1951 Ford F-1 Pickup Restomod
Black and patina exterior239 CID Flathead V-8 engine with Offenhauser intake manifold, dual carbs and exhaustsThree-speed manual and 3.92 gearing114-inch wheelbase4,700 GVWR and a 45-cubic-foot cargo bedThe Bonus-Built Ford trucks were the first post-war designs and the first to be completely separate from the company's passenger car line. This example is a 1951 Ford F-1 truck that was built at Ford's Kansas City, Missouri assembly plant at 12th Street and Winchester in 1951.
This truck was originally painted black but these days, it sports an awesome set of patina. The truck's bodywork remains largely original and the engine bay is extremely tidy and the battery appears new. The truck has a 114-inch wheelbase and there are 45 cubic feet in the cargo bed.
This F-1 rolls on American Classic whitewall tires, size 205/75R15 at all four corners. Each tire is mounted to a red steel wheel with no wheel cover. The tires and wheels are in good original condition and the red adds a counterpoint to the patina of the exterior.
Under the hood is a strong running 239 CID Flathead V-8 engine with an Offenhauser intake manifold, dual carburetors and breathing via dual exhausts. Backing this engine is a three-speed manual transmission with a 3.92:1 rear end.
Inside, the tan vinyl bench seat looks great and the floor, headliner and three-spoke steering wheel have plenty of patina. The roll up windows show cracks, the wipers are inoperable and speedometer fluctuates. The instrument panel and inner door liners are in similar condition.
For 1951, the grille was restyled with a large horizontal bar, moving the headlights further apart, painted either ivory or argent, with either painted or chrome headlight trim; the hood trim was also redesigned. If specified, a V-8 emblem appeared on the front fascia above the grille opening. The truck underwent several revisions, with the cab receiving a larger rear window and updated door panels; for pickup trucks, the tailgate was redesigned, along with the introduction of a hardwood floor.
The first-generation F-Series truck (known as the Ford Bonus-Built) was introduced in late 1947 (going on sale January 16, 1948), replacing Ford trucks introduced in 1941. It had a flat, one-piece windshield and integrated headlamps. It had a wider cab. Options included the "See-Clear" windshield washer (operated by foot plunger), passenger-side windshield wiper and sun visor and Passenger-side taillight. The F-1 truck was also available with additional stainless-steel trim and two horns as an option. Front fenders were also restyled, as was the front bumper. The rear window was made larger for better visibility, and a redesigned dashboard featured an ashtray and a glove-box.
Design of the F-Series truck changed tremendously from 1950 to 1954. From 1948 to 1950, the grill was a series of horizontal bars and the headlights were set into the fenders. For 1951 and 1952, the headlights were connected by a wide aerodynamic cross piece with three similarly aerodynamic supports. The rear window was wider in these later trucks and the dashboard was redesigned.
Competition to this F-1 in 1951 included Chevrolet's 3100 half-ton, Dodge's B-series half-ton and GMC's New Design trucks.
