Description for Ford Mustang 1965
Up for consideration for one lucky person is a very unique package.As all enthusiasts know, there were only 5,776 mustang fastbacks built in 1965 with luxury interiors (code 63B). This car is a 63B and also happens to be a factory silversmoke gray color (k code paint). I have seen estimates that approximately 2.7 percent of the 64.5 and 65 mustang were painted this color. If these estimates are correct then the math goes like this: 5776 x 0.027 = 156 total 1965 mustang fastbacks built with luxury interiors and silversmoke gray paint. Now add in that this particular vehicle is even more rare due to the fact that it is a factory GT (code PIO or Performance Image Option). I would venture to guess that there were only a handful of fastbacks built with these specifications in 1965. The original buck tag documents this configuration.
Now, consider that I purchased this vehicle over five years ago nearly restored but not running, only to later find out that the engine doesn't turn over. It looks like it has been rebuilt but seems locked up. As the old adage goes, most middle aged men have more money than time, and I was no exception. With visions of installing a 1970 302 Boss engine in this little gem, I spent a small fortune to purchase a true 1970 302 Boss engine and have it rebuilt by none other than Steve Schmidt Racing in Indianapolis (look them up at www.steveschmidtracing.com). This was nearly five years ago and I don't remember all of the details of the build but I can tell you the following: the engine has the 4 bolt mains and factory forged crank and rods, ARP bolts, it was bored 30 over and vintage TRW L2324 pistons were installed, hardened valve seats were installed so it could burn unleaded gas, it has roller rockers and a mild camshaft (Competition Cams I think), an Aviaid racing oil pan, a D1ZE9424-EA Buddy Bar aluminum intake, a reproduction Holley carburetor, an imitation dual point distributor, and the engine was painted black to match the 1965 engine color. I have seen similar engines selling for $12,000 to $15,000.
There is a backstory to this engine in that I actually bought it along with all of the parts to assemble it 31 years ago from a machine shop that had machined it for a customer that was going to install it in a Cobra kit car but changed his mind at the last minute and went with a big block. I was in college at the time so I ultimately sold it to a local enthusiast. By luck, and a little financial persuasion, this individual then sold it back to me after storing it for decades in a climate controlled environment. I can go on and on if a serious buyer is interested in additional details.
I also have the following that I planned to install in the car: a factory nine inch rearend housing from a 1965 K Code Mustang, a factory bellhousing for a 302 Boss and close ratio 4 speed Toploader (RUG-AW), reconditioned pedal and linkages from a 1965 manual transmission Mustang, brand new custom ceramic coated headers from Ford Powertrain Applications (www.fordpowertrain.com) used to install a 302 Boss engine in a 1965 chassis, and Ron Morris adjustable motor mounts used to provide the wiggle room needed to stuff the 302 Boss in the 1965 engine compartment.
I am a perfectionist and must mention that the car is not perfect. A few of the blemishes that the buyer needs to be aware of include: a dent in the passenger side rocker panel, a small run in the paint on the rocker panel under the driver's side door, the driver's side fender needs to be aligned better, a few minor paint chips, probably bondo in the door corners where Mustangs always rust, the rims appear to be very old with a few pits and dings, and the Firestone F70-14 tires do not hold air that long (had to replace the driver's side rear tire with a non matching because of dry rot).
The engine compartment, floor pans and trunk are in great condition, it has a brand new dual exhaust system, new wiring harness, and the pony interior is all new.
The car has been sitting in my mother-in-laws garage since I bought it and the rebuilt 302 Boss engine has been in my garage since the rebuild. It's time to let someone else finish what I can't seem to find time to do.
