Description for Ford Model A 1930
1930 Ford Model A Sedan
Walter Briggs was a trade upholster, who later went to work for B F Everitt Company, whom at the time was supplying a few specialty bodies and interiors to Ford. Henry Ford took a liking to Briggs who eventually became president of Everitt Company. He was later was able to parlay his relationship with Ford into a large enough entity, that he could buy out Everitt, and did so, changing the name to Briggs Company. A company that in its heyday supplied almost all bodies for Ford's Model A's.
As seen in the photographs of this consignment, presented is a Briggs Blind Back 4-Door Sedan. This car is a 1930 Edition of the Model A, and has a beautifully restored Mohair interior, as well as many other good qualities. A smooth running inline 4-cylinder flathead engine, two tone body, that is in fair condition, and a good looking underbelly are seen in this consignment. The consigner states that he found the car in a basement of someone's house, needed something to do in retirement, and dug it out! Time passed, the consigner became unable to finish the work, and now offers the car to someone else to take it to the next level.
Exterior
Tan with black eyebrow fenders, the Briggs 8 window passenger compartment, 4 doors and good condition chrome make up the major parts of the exterior. New rubber running board inserts, are in black painted fenders, we can see the correct chrome exterior lighting of the period, right out of 1930. Small red signal lights have been inserted into the visor on the bezels of these lights. The lower black panel under the hood cowling show some rust invasion, but it is relatively minor. Chrome radiator surround has a chip guard installed and is also original to a 1930 Model A. A black toolbox hangs directly below the radiator, between the front suspension. Straw yellow spoked 19-inch wheels, and black sidewall 4.75-5.00/19 tires are mounted. A spare is seen hanging from the rear panel directly in front of a trunk. Exterior glass and all mechanicals related to the glass are in working condition, including the pop out ventilating front windshield. The roof is painted black and has a vinyl insert, and some of the black paint shows scratching. Plenty of caulk has been pumped in for the seam between the top and the front visor which is made of metal.
Interior
Beautifully done in Camel Mohair, it is in very good condition on the bench seats, as well as the 4 door panels. Mohair is present in the headliner which is also in very good condition. A typical Ford 1930's "mask style" instrument cluster is present on a black painted metal dash, framed with wood appliqu. Carpet appears in good condition, and interestingly, shifter, as well as handbrake are in original condition. Steering wheel appears original and Bakelite material is slightly cracked throughout but is wrapped in a modern-day leather wrap.
Drivetrain
The engine, a flat head 4-cylinder is connected to a 3-speed manual transmission. The electrical system is converted to 12-volt and appears to be in working condition. Drum brakes are on all 4 wheels, with buggy style spring suspension connected to a solid I beam axle in the front and wish bones in the rear. A newer stock exhaust system is installed.
Undercarriage
Some surface rust is present, but body hangers, frame and floorpans are all good and structurally sound. A stainless exhaust system can be seen, and 4-wheel mechanical drum brakes are all around.
Drive-Ability
Good starter and nice driver, shifted smoothly, and was fairly easy to steer.
A nice example of a 1930 4-Door Sedan, with a few faults, and some nice patina, but pretty much a car you can get in and enjoy immediately. You can wrench and paint on it later, as for now it's just right.
