Description for Ford Ford GT 1966
______________________________________________________________________If you are reading this. chances are you understand the history surrounding the famed GT40. But just in case you aren't a Ford racing aficionado. here's some quick background: Before the GT40. Ferrari dominated the 24 hours of Le Mans. They had won 5 straight years from 1960-65. Ford's GT40 had showed signs of promise. however battled constant failures before the entire GT40 program was handed over to the legendary Carroll Shelby at the end of the 1964 season. By 1966. with Shelby at the helm. the team was a force to be reckoned with and the GT40's went on to win the 24 hours of Le Mans four consecutive times. The GT40 provided Ford its first ever Le Mans victory. and the GT40 Mk IV that won the 1967 Le Mans is. to this day. the only car designed and built in the United States to ever win at Le Mans. You can see why the GT40 has such a historic significance within the classic car industry. This is why companies like Integrity Coachworks/KVA & Later Sabre Automotive continue to build GT40 replicas like the one we have before you today. This 1994 frame-off built GT40 is 100% street legal but don't under estimate it. like its older counterparts. its easily as capable on the track as well. Now with that said. this KVA GT40 MK1 frame off build was designed by Kenneth Vincent Atwell (Senior Production Engineer with Ford Racing in England). He was tasked by Ford to build the molds and replacement parts for the original GT40 race cars. He was later given permission by Ford Motor Co. to use the molds and went on to produce his own GT40. the KVA. Due to his access of these molds and space frame design including correct dimensions. fiberglass and carbon fiber bodies. the KVA is one of most accurate GT40 recreations ever built. Here is an intersting writeup on Ken Atwell. his involvement with Ford and the evolvement of his KVA company. "KVA. United Kingdom. During the 1960s an Englishman. Kenneth Vincent Attwell. yearned to own a GT40. In 1982 while Ken was Senor Engineer for Ford in Swansea. they asked Ken to help with the restoration of their GT40 MKIII car that had been involved in a filming accident. Ken agreed to their request. and was allowed to take moulds off the body panels which he would use to construct his own car. He designed a space frame/semi ladder type chassis which turned out to exceed the required torsional strength and by late 1982 his first. blood red KVA (Kenneth Vincent Attwell) 'Mk 3' GT40 'was complete and was displayed by Ford in the reception area of their Swansea plant. Howard Walker of "Motor Magazine" test drove the car and wrote a very complementary article in the October 1983 issue. The front page spread and photographs created a lot of interest. With Ford's blessing. Ken formed a small company. KVA. and started marketing his very own GT40 MKI & MKIII continuation cars. Ken continued his full time work as Senior Engineer at Ford and as this proved quite stressful. his wife Margaret stepped in to run the business. Margaret proved a very capable manager for the KVA business and continued until she retired in 1994 after selling the business to Jules Hoffman of Integrity Motors in Florida USA. The KVA GT40 was continually improved and in 1985 the MK I body style was introduced. Through a phase of using Jaguar suspension in a "B" type chassis. to the use of wishbone suspension both front and rear in the "C" type chassis. the KVA MKI produced a car which. to a large extent. replicated the original suspension design. Customers included Ford Motor Co at Dagenham. Lord Trotman. chief of Ford worldwide. GTD. Hightech Welding. Thomas Hermson in Germany. RML Racing. Dee Type in the UK. ERA in the US. Dax cars. Ray Mallock. as well as original Ford GT40 owners who purchased body parts. Jigs and moulds were also supplied to other countries including South Africa where GT40 continuation car builds continue to this day. During the period from the mid eighties till 1994. many rivals started building GT40 cars. in many cases copying Ken's design. Ken Attwell is therefore considered the 'father' of GT40 continuation. "References: Ken Attwell; David Hodges. Ford GT40: An Anglo-American Supercar Classic I also have an article from "Super Ford" as seen pictured from August of 1994. mentioning the supreme quality of the build from Integrity Coachworks. ______________________________The car has the following parts / options (much more to list. but here it is in a nutshell) front & rear clips - fiberglass; body center - carbon fiber front & rear windshields - safety glass; side windows & lens covers - plexiglass safety foam cell saddle tanks - 11 gal. each 2 speed wipers & electric washer unit custom dash with Elan electronic gauges (factory ordered option. shows less than 300 miles and all gauges are functional) vintage heater & AC (fully functional) 7 row core radiator w/ electric fan (dual) halogen headlights brake. turn & tail lights door latches & posts seats – Superformance Suede Nickel Plated GT40 Seatsmoto-lite steering wheel and correct gt40 hub / decalcorrect gt40 stripe kit 2 sets Simpson 5 pt. safety restraints 85 Corvette spindles/hubs with 12in vented discs. front & rear hydraulic brakes – corvette brakes f & r; master cylinder hydraulic clutch mechanical or elec hydraulic parking brake Goodrich P205/60R-15 (front); P275/50R-15 (rear) 5 spoke American mag rims w/knockoff spinners 1969 Ford 351W Block complete rebuild (+30-10 on crank) (266 miles on engine and chassis) Ford Racing 4 barrel heads Alum.
