NOTE ON PICTURES: My photos attached to this auction are hosted on Photobucket. He is a busy guy and asked me to handle the sale for him. His number is available should you want to discuss the car. The 1965 & 66 Mustang 2+2 Fastback is certainly one of the icons of 60’s classics and appreciating nicely over time. These cars aren’t “outrageously” priced yet and are great fun to own. drive or show. This gorgeous Raven Black on Black GT Recreation is a premier example of one man’s dream to build a super Show Car with all the options from 1966. The car came from the factory with Standard Interior that has been upgraded to the full GT Package with the addition of some very cool and I might add EXTREMELY COMFORTABLE Black Recaro Seats. One of the biggest slams on the first gen Mustangs is the factory seat. they are just downright uncomfortable for any kind of long-distance driving. These Recaro Seats are one of the nicest fitting seats I have ever experienced and look “right” in this Black Beauty. Check out the custom rear seats that were built to match the Recaros. I have been building and restoring cars for the past 25 years and would rate this black beauty as a solid #2 car. In June of 2008 the Mustang Owner’s Club of California (MOCC) “Mustangs In The Park” at Woodly Park in Van Nuys presented this car with “First Place” for Personalized 1966 Mustang Fastback. Pictures of the trophy are below. The car was built in Metuchen so most likely delivered originally to the east coast. We think the original owner may have been transplanted to CA in the 70’s. when the car fell into a 20+ year ownership by the second owner. a CA Mustang guy. who only used the car sparingly as a weekend car and was sure at the time the mileage was original. The third owner had the car from 2006 to late 2008 and spent the majority of the money on the mechanical upgrades and interior restoration. The car was painted Black back in the early 90’s by the second owner and though it is not “perfect” it is extremely nice and goes to show just how straight and bondo free the body was and still is on this car. To win a First Place in 2008 is a testament to the quality of the paint job so long ago. The paint is definitely a base/clear type of paint with an incredible shine. swirl-free and a 10 from five feet away. If you get right up on top of it you can see a few imperfections and a couple of cracks in the paint back where the fastback swoops into the rear fender/truck area. See the first three pictures after the close-up wheel picture. Let me make it perfectly clear. I look for perfection. but other than these minor flaws in the paint I would rate the paint an 8. 8 and good enough for almost any show except a top concour event. These little areas could easily be re-spotted in to the black. The body is straight as an arrow. take a hard look at the shut-lines all the way around the car. Closeup pictures of the undersides of the fenders and rockers (after undercarriage pictures) will showcase the original metal. no bondo. no rot or rust anywhere. There is no evidence that there has ever been any in the car. I also took closeups of the undercarriage so one can see the original welds that all appear to be factory correct and original. Take a look at the bottom rear corner panel lips that tuck under the car; as nice as you will find. Pull out the micrometer. bring over your super magnet if you like. you will find this legendary classic to be a very honest solid. bondo free vehicle. There’s just no such thing as an early Mustang that isn’t a great car. Fun to drive. with plenty of power. and striking good looks. even 49 years later. and it’s hard to imagine a better hobby car. The strength of the aftermarket suggests that they are some of the most popular cars in history. and when you see a beautifully restored one like this extremely rare ’66 289 Fastback 2+2 it’s easy to understand why. This spectacular Fastback is simply stunning. having received an extensive restoration that covered every aspect of the car. The finished product is handsome and well-executed. with obvious signs of the most highly skilled workmanship throughout. The entire body was a complete rust and damage free original. having lived a simple garaged life in CA with limited weekend duty. All sheet metal appears to be original to the car. All the chrome and trim is stunning and appears like brand new and things like the emblems. door handles. and mirrors are all extremely nice. “restored” or new. Every stitch of weather-strip. rubber and felt was altogether replaced with brand new high-quality issue. Lift up the hood and you’ll find the original 1966 289 “C” Code motor. A Paxton Supercharger was added to the built engine in 2008. Ford Racing valve covers and anything that wasn’t painted was given a correct plating job. The top-end of the motor was rebuilt sometime back in the late 90’s. hardened valve seats were added at that time. Now. if you like Mustangs stock. this is a really easy reverse back to the carburetor underneath. Same holds true if the seats are not your cup of tea. Personally I like both touches. A full rotisserie restoration means that the bottom of the car is as nicely finished as the top. and nothing was overlooked. The transmission is a the date-coded correct C-4 Cruise-O-Matic. New lines. hoses. and hardware ensure that the braking and fuel systems are in good working order. and there’s a new gas tank out back. Power disc front and correct rear drums live behind a set of appropriate set of reproduction chromed styled steel wheels and hubcaps. with a brand new set of BF Goodrich Silvertone Radials with double redlines for a period-correct look and feel. The electrical system was completely replaced during the restoration and everything works per factory specs. Inside this blue oval beaut. a correct gorgeous black Pony Interior features the Recaro’s and the rear seats were upholstered and rebuilt to “MATCH” the Recaro’s. a really cool addition to the overall interior. Everything from the tight headliner to the fade-free carpet appears restoration-fresh. The dash is loaded with a brand new gauge and speedo cluster and of course the Rally Pac. Sound comes from a vintage “looking” AM/FM Stereo with “Ford” emblazened on the face of the unit. In the trunk you will see the neatly adapted Alpine Model MRP-F450 V-Power 4-Channel Power Amplifier and Hide-A-Way Subwoofer. Bring your iPod for your own customs sounds to the perfect cruise. Behind the passengers. a completely restored trunk features a correct jack. correct lid decal and a full size spare tire on a Pony wheel. And. like most first generation Mustangs. this 2+2’s design and detailing is impressive proof that 60s-era Ford definitely employed some of the industry’s best designers. My friend has not driven the car much since he bought it in 2009. When he drove it up to my house and dropped it off I went to take it for a drive and the battery was completely dead. he had to jump it to get it to my house. So. naturally I tried to charge it but the battery was five years old so it was time to go. Unfortunately it was impossible to take out the battery without moving the Paxton Supercharger slightly out of the way. We simply put the Supercharger back to the way we had moved it. Once the new battery was installed I started it up and took it for a drive. The Super Charger was making a noise that did not sound right to me. I called the owner and asked him and he said that the car always ran very smoothly. The long short of this is we simply disconnected the Paxton. took the belt off and the cover above the carb so it could breath. Now the car runs as smooth as a C motor should. We also did a compression check and found 145 - 150 in each cylinder. I do not know if there is anything wrong with the Supercharger or not. The owner says it was running just fine when he dropped it off. Obviously we did something in the process of putting in the battery. This should be noted as the owner does not want to spend any more money on the car and I don’t have anyone locally that knows about these units. Aesthetically. the bottom of this clean Ford has been restored to the same high standards as its striking exterior. interior and pristine engine compartment. There’s simply nothing like keying up a legendary pony car. The sound… the feeling at idle… the relentless surge of torque as you power through gears… And this ’66 Fastback is exactly that. while effortlessly capturing everything we love about a no expense sparred restoration to an extremely original car. If you’re looking for a highly desirable classic that’ll provide years of weekend fun. and rack up more than its fair share of fans in the process. this is your kind of car!
