Description for Ford Mustang 1965

1964 ½ Mustang Convertible

AMERICAS favorite pony car!

This classic 1964 ½ Mustang convertible is being offered on the 50th Anniversary of the introduction of this iconic American classic. This is a rare opportunity to own a “first year introduction” of a car marquee now called an “American Legend”

This specific car is the base six cylinder model powered by a 170 CI motor and one barrel carburetor. The cars has been converted from original generator to an alternator probably to accommodate the needs of the add-on air conditioning which is thought to be dealer installed. Yes it does work and blows cool air. Clutch is working on compressor. No weird noises. It still has R12 freon. I purchased a 132 conversion kit a few years back but did not install it. The engine ignition has been converted from the original points to a Pertnonix electronic ignition and coil system. This is located inside the distributer and maintains the original look of the car. The car has an automatic transmission. It runs and shifts well. Steers easy and straight with no road drift. No power steering. No power brakes.

The exterior of the car is painted Wimbledon white which is correct to the car. It has a turquoise color pinstripe. It is an older repaint that still shows well. The top is power also a turquoise color in decent shape no rips or tears. It goes up and down great no weird noises or manual assistance needed. Top bows and pads are in great shape.

The sheet metal is decent. The car probably had half quarter panels installed at time of restoration many years ago. There is plastic filler in lower extremities of body. How much ….don’t know. But in honest disclosure it’s there. Most cars that have had panel replacement or that are from the Midwest have plastic filler. Period.

The interior of the car is sporty it was originally all blue- turquoise color which was not really to my liking. I put in a short air conditioning console changed metal dash color to off white and the dash pad to bright turquoise blue. New instrument bezel. New bright turquoise carpet. New white door panels. New stainless sill plates. The seating has been transformed from turquoise to correct 1965 parchment using a special marhyde colorant. No rips or tears. The result of the interior change is a “breathtaking” result that really is appealing to all that have seen it. Purchaser can easily go back to original colors if they desire. The fuel gauge is currently non-operational. Installed and tested new relay which is now receiving signal. Probably a faulty float in tank. The horn works when it wants to and inconsistent.

The condition of frame and underbody of a classic mustang convertible is the most important factor leading to a purchase decision. The first thing a buyer should look at is the door and fit gap between rear and front fenders. It should be even and plenty of space at both the top and bottom of the doors. Close up pictures have been provided to show you gaps on this car. This indicates unibody is solid and car is not “sagging” which is the case with many on the market especially at lower price levels. During the restoration of this car (guessing in 1980’s) inner rocker panels torque boxes and front floors were replaced.

The unibody replacement panels were fabricated and not factory type or aftermarket OEM style. The good is that they are thicker than aftermarket ones- currently available and will last much longer. They do not have factory contour and ribs. The inner fenders and firewall under hood is solid and engine compartment is very clean. A couple of small pin holes under battery on battery tray. The trunk area is solid and covered with a por15 type material. There were pinholes in the trunk and they were patched by previous owner. Rear frame rails have also been patched not replaced.

The car does have a spare tire with factory mounting hardware and factory scissor jack and ratchet lug nut tool. The tires are newer radials white sidewall. Optional spinner hubcaps in very good condition.I can assist potential buyers with finding transportation if needed.I apologize for the long- winded description I will post additional photos soon.
