The market on the 1977 and 1978 Y82 Trans Ams is absolutely red hot right now and they are skyrocketing in value. There are only a handful available at any given time and they are truly one of the hottest spots in the American classic car market right now. This fact is boosted even more by the release of the new Smokey and the Bandit movie and Burt Reynolds personal Y82 selling for $480. 00. Whenever we get one of these cars in stock they always generate a great flurry of activity. One could easily buy this car now and sell it for more than the purchase price in the years to come. Please note that while the Pontiac 400ci engine that is currently installed in the car is not numbers matching. the numbers matching 400ci block is pictured below. There is a specific photo of the stamping on the engine. On the engine block is stamped. "27N197419. " The "2" would indicate the Pontiac division of GM. the "7" would be model year. 1977. and the "197419" is the last six digits of the VIN indicating this is the original "numbers matching" engine block. We obviously cannot verify the authenticity of any stampings. but it is on the correct spot on the engine block. in the correct format. and we have included the close up photo below for any perspective buyer's review. As a side note. this Trans Am is not a dealer auction vehicle. We hand pick each car after careful inspection. If you have a question about the Pontiac. just give us a call. model description Y82 :1976-1978Let me start saying that 1976 was the first year for Special Editions. in 1976 Pontiac would celebrate their 50th anniversary. and by the way they built very few of them. therefore considered rare. 1977 was the year the movie Smokey and the Bandit was released and they used a 1977 Pontiac Trans Am Special Edition in that film. making the 1977 TA an instant hit . We don't know for sure why. but Pontiac did not stamped the code Y82 on the cowl tags. at least I have not seen any in 76-77 models. so here is some tips to help you figure if your car is SE or not. All Y82 Trans Ams had black exterior (cowl tag must show 19L 19U). they all had Gold Birds decals. German style lettering . Gold pin stripping all around and Gold front grilles. The interior was not necessarily black. we have seen and restored SE's with red interior. white . Tan. As per interior. all the SE's came with Gold swirled dash bezel and gold spokes on the steering wheel. Most of them had Deluxe interior. but there are exceptions. we have seen many with standard interior. In 1977 the exterior emblems used were RED. not gold as many folks think (arrow head on the nose and wheel caps emblems). the door emblems and the shifter emblem all were gold . they were all gold in 1978 and up. not in 1977. 1977 Special Editions came with 15 x 7 snowflake rims with gold painted inserts. 1976 came with gold polycast honeycomb rims. All Y82's came with HURST t tops in 1976 and 1977 . in 1978 you would only find Hurst T-tops on car produced before March 1978. after that they came with bigger t tops from "Fisher" but if you wanted a SE with non tops this was also possible. and the code for that would have been Y81code. So now you know what are the basics to recognize a Special Edition. but honestly that's not enough proof. Now days you can buy all the necessary parts to make any black TA look a like a Y82. this said you need to look further. The only way to know that your car is a real SE is with the original build sheet. original window sticker. or PHS documentation. condition Exterior The Black and Gold exterior is in nice driver condition. The paint has a nice gloss and dazzling shine; it is extremely reflective as one can see in the photos and video. The SE hood bird and other decals are in great shape and are not faded or peeling. All of the weather-stripping on the car has been replaced at some point and is still soft and not brittle. The original 15"x7" snowflake wheels are in beautiful restored condition with no curb rash and have an brilliant finish. The BF Goodrich tires have about 90% tread left. There are no major imperfections that have been intentionally excluded from the photos. There are some small blemishes. checking. and touch ups in the paint around the car; some are visible in the photos and some are much too faint. but overall the car looks in person as it does in the photos. Actually. the car looks much better in person in natural light than it does in our shop under the harsh T5HO fluorescent lamps. As one can see in the many photos of the underside of the car it is very solid. The previous owner reiterated that the car was undercoated when new. which really helped preserve the underside and protect the car. We have included specific photos below of the area on the car that are most prone to rust to show how clean this TA really is. There is a bubble on the lower right rear quarter and a specific photo of the spot below. The tail panel and spring perches are very clean with no rust. which are usually two of the worst spots on these f-bodies. The trunk is very solid and unmolested and nicely detailed with a spare tire. original jack. jack base. lug wrench. original trunk mat. The difficult to find original Hurst T-top storage bag does show its age. but is also included with the car. This Trans Am has a stamping on the radiator core support. which is pictured below. The core support shows a "2 28 77" stamp. or February 28. 1977. This stamping would be correct and original as it precedes the car's build date of the forth week of April. 1977 (04D). As one can imagine. if this Trans Am had ever sustained even a minor front end collision this part would have been repaired or replaced. The original stamping is great to see in tact. The Trans Am looks in person as it does in the photos. Interior The original black deluxe vinyl interior of the Trans Am looks amazingly well preserved. The seats look in person just as they do in the photos with no rips. split seams. or signs of excessive wear and are in great overall condition. The driver's seat appears to have been at least partially recovered so there is no wear in the typical area on the bolster where the driver gets in and out. The carpet is in great condition with no major stains. rips. or holes. The original dash is in excellent condition with no cracks. fading. or sun damage. A very cool Pioneer Super Tuner III digital cassette player was installed years ago with Sony 6x9 speakers and sounds great in the car. Most importantly the original dash remains intact and uncut. All interior lights and gauges work as they should with the obvious exception of the clock. The original door panels look great with no cracks or splits. and both door pulls are solid and in tact. There is one small blemish on the bottom of the steering wheel. but as one can see in the photos it is not very noticeable. The headliner is in great shape with no holes. stains. and not sagging at all. The package tray looks great with no warping. fading. or sun damage. This car has not been smoked in; there is no aroma of cigarettes what so ever. The interiors in this era Trans Am are not known the wear well and the excellent condition of this mostly original interior is a true testament to the care this car has received over the years. The interior looks just as good in person as it does in the photos. Mechanical This Trans Am appears to be in very good mechanical condition. The Pontiac 400 engine that is in the car has a "YT" engine block code and is in good running condition. The car is an nice driver that feels great on the road and at highway speeds. In the video below one can observe the car accelerating on the highway up to about 75mph. braking to stoplight. and going through some curves. Please note that it shifts well. there are no strange vibrations. and the car performs quite nice overall. There is no smoke when starting or driving this Special Edition. It starts right away every time. idles well. and runs well. The brakes are responsive and do not pull to one side or the other. A true dual exhaust system with not catalytic converter was just installed and gives this Trans Am a nice exhaust tone at idle and cruising speeds. Headers were installed on this TA years ago and there is a slight exhaust leak that is audible. which is very common on cars with headers. This appears to be the only significant modification on this car and can easily be reversed back to factory configuration at any muffler shop. Also. the engine compartment is beautifully clean and detailed as on can see in the photos. The speedometer. tachometer. odometer. oil pressure. fuel. and battery gauges all work as they should. The compressor clicks on as it should when the A/C is turned on as one can see in the photos so the a/c should work. The blower motor is a bit finicky and it is very cold so it was hard to properly test the a/c. As with many older carbureted cars this one is a little cold blooded and there is a bit of play in the shift lever. but the car goes into gear and shifts fine. The cruise control and horn do not work. This Trans Am has lots of power having a Pontiac 400 engine and handles amazingly well. Not enough can be said as to how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car. especially on a beautiful day with the T-tops removed. Overall Condition Overall. this 1977 PHS documented Special Edition Y82 Trans Am is in very nice overall stock condition. It is a great value and we have it priced to sell. Anniversary and Special edition GM classics always hold a high premium over their standard counterparts and this is especially true with the SE Trans Am's. Verifiable originality is also extremely important in pricing on these cars and as one can see this Pontiac is documented and undoubtedly a correct SE. This car turns heads and gets tons of attention wherever it goes. The value of these cars has gone up exponentially in recent years. They are all solid investments for a collector or the average enthusiast. Cars like this are the Barrett Jackson stars of the future. One could easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the purchase price with minimal effort.
