Description for Volkswagen Bus/Vanagon 1980
Important note to bidders: This is a no reserve auction which means the vehicle will definitely sell to the highest bidder! Please keep this in mind when you place a bid and be prepared and have funds available to complete the transaction. Thanks! He is a unique 1980 air-cooled VW Vanagon Westfalia up for auction. It is powered by the 2. 0 liter fuel injected motor coupled with an automatic transmission. It also came from the factory with the P-22 interior option and the auxiliary gas heater. Originally it was light blue. but was repainted a lemon-lime yellow in recent years. All exposed metal surfaces in the interior and under the camper roof still retain the original light blue paint. The vanagon runs and drives. is currently registered. and comes with a clear title. It is in good overall condition and is ready for minor restoration work and your own finishing touches. Here are some specific details about each area of the vehicle: Engine and transmission: I don’t know the long term history of the motor. but it runs and drives well. I took several short trips this summer and fall and had a lot of fun with it. The odometer says 146k miles but the title says mileage unknown. Some of the maintenance work I have done includes new battery. new ignition switch. new temp2 sensor. new fuel pump relay. new fuel filter. some new vacuum lines. and new spark plugs. The automatic transmission shifts as it should. Also. I learned the hard way that the fuel gauge is not entirely accurate… it still shows a quarter tank when empty! I know these VWs can be quirky so I've tried to stay ahead of things by doing the maintenance I just described. Brakes: The brakes work well on this van. Recently I put new drums and brake shoes on the rear. and bled the system. The front disc brake pads have a fair amount of meat left on them. and I will include a new set of pads as well. Tires: Tires are in good shape with plenty of tread all around. spare is in its holder as well. Body & Frame: Overall this van is in really good condition. The frame is super solid. The body has a few minor areas of rust. including just behind the left front wheel (a very little bit behind the passenger front as well. The very bottom of the sliding door has some rust through along the seam but it isn’t visible unless you get on the ground(see photo). The van was originally light blue but was painted this bright yellow by a previous owner. It wasn’t a high quality paint job so it’s starting to show imperfections. It looks like some filler was used on the lower seam on the driver’s side at the time of the paint job. The van looks great going down the road and gets a ton of attention. but up close the paint shows it age. Some pictures may not show the plastic bumper corners but I did install new ones so they are included. Also the little flaps that cover the camper equipment hook-ups are not there anymore. Interior: This van originally had a rare P-22 interior option that featured a longer bench seat. an extra jump seat. and different kitchen equipment. Unfortunately the kitchen equipment and table were removed by a previous owner. and the bench seat was shortened similar to the P-27 interior design. I have built a custom interior with new upholstery (the original VW fabric is still there underneath the new fabric) a custom storage compartment and jump-seat with matching cushion. and a cabinet that can be used to house a stove and/or sink. The upper bed cushion has new upholstery as well. The steel floor is super solid. and I installed and birch hardwood floor over it. I put in matching curtains on all the windows. and all the glass is good. The front seats and dashboard are in good condition. The front carpet has been removed and I just have some floor mats there now. The front floor pans have some surface rust. and the driver’s side has a few tiny holes. The fiberglass roof is solid but the paint shows wear. There is no camper canvas on it at the moment but I will include a brand new pop-top canvas. it just has to be installed. I will also include a new top seal that goes between the two sections. All the original auxiliary gas heater components appear to be there however I have not tried to get it going… very interesting option though! This is a cool VW Westy. in running condition. that’s ready to be enjoyed by a new owner. It needs some cosmetics and interior finishing. but overall it is a solid example of an air-cooled 3rd generation VW camper. The van is sold as-is with no warranty. The buyer is responsible for vehicle transport. however I can provide a quote for third party delivery (just email me the zip code where it’s going) It could be driven home locally however I have not taken it on any long trips. so driving it long distances without mechanical inspection by the buyer is done at his or her own risk. Again. it’s a no reserve auction so highest bidder wins. good luck! Contact me with any questions. Email. text. or call (860)-377-0700.
