Up for auction is a rare 1971 GMC Sprint with a matching numbers 402 Big Block. Only a few hundred Big Block GMC Sprints were made that year. The car has power steering power disk brakes AC bench seats a Turbo 400 3 speed automatic and a 12 bolt rear end. The AC system had a R134 conversion done to it but the AC clutch just went out. It was blowing cold air before that though and I'm sure it will again. It rolled off the Van Nyes assembly plant and was sold at Hughes Pontiac and GMC in Santa Barbara. This car has been in the family for decades with my dad being the third owner back in the 1980's. My grandpa owned it in the 90's and I owned it from the 2000's on. The odometer shows 73697 miles.The Engine that currently in the car is a .070" over BBC displacing just over 468 cubic inches. The block was purchased from and had all the machine work done by Performance Automotive Warehouse (PAW) before they went out of business. Clearances for the crank and rods have been set up at 1 1/2 thousandths in order to maintain good oil pressure with a standard volume/standard pressure oil pump. Piston to cylinder wall clearance and ring end gap have been set up to run a 150 hp shot of nitrous (never got around to installing and trying a nitrous kit though). Engine has a GM forged crank turned to 10-10 Scat H-beam rods with ARP rod bolts Ross Racing Pistons Edelbrock Victor Jr. Intake and headers leading into a full Flowmaster exhaust. A Holley 750 carb w/ vacuum secondaries HEI ignition 11:1 compression and GM Performance Parts 188 casting iron rectangular port heads (updated version of 990 heads) that that have been fully ported with a 5 angle valve job by Dr. J's performance in Anaheim round out this particular combination. There are also Harland Sharp roller rockers ARP push rods guide plates and studs and a custom grind Isky cam picked out by the head porter to match the flow numbers of the heads. Cam specs are 256/261 duration at .050" with .620" lift. Engine runs on 91 octane gas without pinging or detonation idles at 950 rpm makes enough vacuum to run power brakes without a canister and has less than 500 miles on it. Output on simpler engines that have Been dyno tested by Dr. J's have put out over 600 hp at 6500 rpm with a 7000 rpm redline. The original matching numbers 402 Block and Oval port heads come with the car as well. That engine is currently .030" over and is in need of a rebuild. In all likely hood it would need to go .060" over. The numbers are still visible on the deck of the block.The transmission is a rebuilt turbo 400 with a shift kit a B&M 2800 rpm stall converter that really stalls around 3000. And a custom governor that moved the 1st to 2nd shift point up to 6500 rpm. The 2nd to 3rd shift point happens 700 rpm earlier though.The rear end is a GM 12 bolt with 3.08 gears and an aftermarket posi along with stronger axles. There are no c clip eliminators and just the stock u-joints. The car ran a severely traction limited 12.98 @ 107 at Famoso Raceway. With drag radials a bigger carb and better gearing the car could easily run low 12's at around 112 to 114 mph.The frame is completely rust free with only the body needing minor patch panel work(at least compared to most of the projects that I see). Most of the rust is limited to the corners and a rust hole in the storage compartment underneath the bed. This is a car that has spent it's entire life in California and the rust hasn't gotten any worse since my dad first owned it in the 1980's. It has never had to contend with road salt humidity or anything else that would rot away at it. As you can see from the front view looking down the sides the body is straight and the car has never been in an accident.The interior appears to be in need of new carpeting and the gauges on the dash are showing their age from being faded by the sun but much like the body haven't gotten any worse since I got it. The headliner isn't sagging and the white vinyl seats have held up reasonably well.I'm selling because even though I had fun with the car for a number of years I feel like it is finally time to move on. Vehicle is sold as is and the buyer is expected to arrange transport.
