Description for International Harvester Scout 1979
Up for sale is a 1979 International Harvester Scout 2 SSII model. These vehicles are extremely rare and from what I have read only 150 or so were made in 1979. This on is in rough shape. It doesn't run, it doesn't drive, and it doesn't look pretty. It needs a ton of work on the body and probably mechanically, but is worth the time and effort to the right collector or do it yourselfer. I bought it because of how unique and rare of a vehicle it is and had plans of slowly working on it, but having 6 other vehicles I have not found the time or money to invest into it. Its cool and has alot of good parts and would be a great starting point for someone. My plan was to keep the drivetrain and replace the tub and build it from there. A local body shop that specializes in restorations came by and quoted me approximately $22k to rebuild back to new condition. (Knowing the prices of most scout parts and the money that they bring when restored, I was tempted to have it restored, but unfortunately I do not really want to have $20k plus tied up for over a year while I wait for a truck to be built for me).THE GOOD: It is a rare model and a very limited amount of SSII were built in 1979. It has dana 44 front and rear axles (not sure of gearing). It has the 345 V8 (not sure of mechnical condition), it has the crazy tough and ridiculously expensive DANA 300 transfer case (from what I have read the 1979 models came with the dana 300, but please check my info), It has the torque flite 727 automatic transmission (once again mechanical condition is unknown), and the frame is in good shape with only light surface rust on it. The engine has a set of nice Stans brand headers installed on it. These are pretty pricey. It also has a poly fuel tank installed. The axles and transfer case alone cane be sold for nearly $2000 if parted out, headers are worth another $500, engine $300, trans $400, etc.... I would rather someone get this scout and rebuild it to what it was instead of just parting it out and having another less true SSII on the road.
The BAD: The body.... The front fenders have had rust and some point and were repaired. the hood and grille and toast, the lower grille looks ok, the rocker on driver side is decent, floor boards are decent, rare bed is ok with one bad spot by driver rear wheel, rear quarter panels have been cut and would need to be replaced, windshield frame is junk, roll bar is good, inner bed sides look good, front and rear bumpers are goofy and I started taking them off. Mechanically I havent done anything to it, other than taking the carburetor off to clean and rebuild it. I was going to clean carb, dump fuel tank, clean lines, put in fresh oil and plugs and try to crank it. Pulling the carb off for rebuild is as far as I got..... The engine appears to have been rebuilt some time not too far back in the past. It was cleaned and painted and it looks like alot of parts were replaced. It appears to have been sitting for a while since the rebuild and has sat in my driveway for about 6 months and sat with previous owner for 3 years. I would go into it with the assumption that the mechanicals need overhaul/rebuild.
