1951 LEFT HAND DRIVE XK120 OPEN TWO SEATER (ROADSTER) ROLLING CHASSIS - #671355 XK120 PURCHASED ORIGINALLY AT "RM OVERSEAS", USSELDORF, ERMANY - LIKELY PURCHASED BY A USA SERVICEMAN AND SUBSEQUENTLY BROUGHT TO USA - EARLY RACE HISTORY IN 1950'S - MOVED TO REPAIR SHOP IN LATE 1950'S WHERE BODY WAS SEPARATED FROM CHASSIS AND THEREAFTER FORGOTTEN.
Never before offered to anyone since the late 1950's having sat forgotten on a farm in rural New York, his chassis presents several different ways to be utilized by the Jaguar XK enthusiast: It will be suitable for someone who has need of a replacement chassis. However, ecause it has the extremely rare attribute of having a clear title it therefore would be ideally suited as the basis for a Jaguar XK120 OTS re-body or perhaps a Jaguar "Special". A certain amount of the value of this chassis is indeed having the title and, s out of the country purchasers know, ay prove useful for easy importation into their country. Replacement XK120 chassis are being made today, ut the original identities of XK120's along with their titles are not. This chassis even has a Jaguar Heritage Certificate showing the original specifications of the XK120 as it came with from Coventry.
The previous owner had the XK120 many, any years and was then acquired by my colleague. The chassis has been separated from the rest of the XK120. The previous owner said that the XK was raced in competition early in the 1950's and in fact my colleague has the original two doors on display with the racing numbers still on them.
A Review Of The Condition Of Chassis #671355
My colleague that owns this chassis is an extremely capable craftsman. He is no stranger to this type of work having a fully equipped shop with MIG, IG and arc welding equipment and every sort of automotive related machine in between. As a state policeman he looks forward to retirement when he can pursue his passion for automobile restoration as a full time business. This chassis was rusted in some places as they often are. Being a resourceful man, e found it best to combine two chassis to create one good one. The rear was better on one and the front better on another. The 1951 front section (where the chassis number is visibly stamped) has the engine mounts for the early (up to 1952) XK120 engine. If you wish, e can supply you with the later type engine brackets. The rear section has mounting for the later style SL gear box mounting as that section came from a 1954 XK120.
Armed with a copy of the original factory XK120 chassis blueprint and a mint condition and original XK120 chassis beside him, e refurbished the chassis for #671355 as described below.
You will see in the images below how first the entire chassis was media blasted inside and out. Because the rusted areas were opened up by him prior to the media blasting, e was able to remove the rust from the interior as well. That was a rare opportunity that turned the "lemons" of cut out rust openings into the "lemonade" of being able to access the interior of the chassis box sections because of it!
All the rusted metal sections was superbly replaced by butt welding (in the same 12 gauge thickness as the factory) exact size pieces in each cut out aperture. Also, he quality of the welding was further enhanced by applying "fish plated" overlapping sections over each weld seam. That is something that not everyone would do. All of the corners that had repairs done to them have the same radius as the factory originals. The welds were then ground smooth and skim coated with metal infused filler to make a perfect, nvisible join. By the way, y colleague said that the interior of the box sections did not indicate rusting from the inside out. Perhaps most importantly, his chassis is exactly within factory measurements from front to rear within 1/8" of an inch in all places.
The entire chassis and its various components were then painted with "rust encapsulating" red oxide primer. That was filled by a coat of gloss black chassis black paint. The chassis could be taken to the next level by wet sanding the paint and filling the surface pits that still exist, tc. It is of course perfectly usable as is.
All the scarce brake hardware (e.g. just try and find a set of the rear self adjusting mechanisms) appear to be on the brake assemblies. The emergency brake assembly is off the chassis but included. The rear end assembly seems fine and rotates. Of course the chassis has no steering gearbox and column but it does have the idler box on the other side. The tires are truck tires temporarily put on the 5.5" rims to enable it to roll.
Please note: the remaining chassis components this chassis needs (XK120 engine, earbox, teering gearbox etc) while not original to this XK120 are available at extra cost if desired.
Located as it is in the state of New York, t is close to the shipping ports should it be required to ship overseas. Hopefully this will have an exciting future use to you and good luck bidding!
