If you desire a car that will not likely be duplicated at your local cruise event or in your collection, MotoeXotica Classic Cars is extremely proud to present this 1961 Jaguar Kougar Roadster. Please don't confuse it with those other Cougars; it's not a Mercury. This Jaguar is ready to be put through its paces or enjoyed as a fair-weather grand touring auto. It is basically a rebodied Jaguar XKE/E-Type weighing in at less then 1800 LBS and cranking out 350HP! The sinister look of this stark dark green Kougar matches its absolutely insane performance so perfectly!
Assembled in Sussex, England, this early production Kougar has spent its life in dry southern California and Florida. It has never been raced and has never been involved in an accident. Prior to its complete rotisserie restoration, the car was already in excellent shape, however no expense was spared and no detail too small. The photos and especially our video of this Kougar really tell the detailed story!
Its British Racing Green exterior finish wears the best modern urethane materials on the market today and is excellent overall condition and complete with driver's side rollbar riding shotgun. The pair of Brooklands windscreens are in excellent overall condition but they will not spare driver and passenger from much. Goggles and helmets should be considered. The vehicles lights are in very good overall shape, as are the wire wheels, which along with the rest of the car's chromed bits, have been painted a matte black. Those black wires reside within Pirelli P5 215/70VR15 radials.
The car's body panels are all straight and solid, as one would expect from the restoration that has been executed. The engine bay is very tidy. During the restoration process, the car received a thorough and complete overhaul of its Jaguar 3.8L straight six-cylinder engine, four-speed manual transmission with Laycock overdrive and rear end. The bottom end has a decked block with polished cylinder bore. There are new forged pistons, new polished brass plugs and new headstuds. The engine has dual SU sidedraft carburetors, polished intake manifold and velocity stacks. All fuel lines were replaced and the brakes and exhaust were upgraded to stainless steel.
Inside, the instrument panel and gauges remain as-built from the factory, minus a slight clean-up and restoration by Nisonger, and are in very good overall condition. There is no fuel gauge, however, so make sure you top up before embarking on any medium- or long-range journeys. The black leather bucket seats are in excellent shape, as is the matching carpet/floor mats. There's a three-spoke steering wheel facing the driver while the center console and shift lever are both in good order. The closely-spaced brake and clutch pedals shine in the light. There is no radio in this car; the engine and exhaust system provide the soundtrack. The Kougar is included with a full matching tonneau cover.
Its tube chassis was stripped and powder-coated to a gorgeous black. The front suspension has new Spax adjustable shock absorbers, stainless brakes lines, stainless steel brake pistons, Dunlap and Girling brake calipers and rotors. Even the Girling fluid reservoir bottles and straps got a makeover. In the rear are half shafts with Spicer joints. The Jaguar XKE rear independent suspension with 4 coilover's was similarly restored, upgraded and painted.
Out back is a fuel cell, which is marked with a large, chrome cover and was treated to the same restorative treatment, as was the steering column, the Lucas 40 series generator, which received a new drive belt, and a new Lucas regulator. There's a stainless steel clutch line and braided clutch hose. The brake servo and rack have been treated to a refresh, too. Handling the cooling is a Jaguar Kougar multi-core aluminum radiator.
The Kougar started as a man's inspiration. In the mid-1970s, Englishman Rick Stevens decided to build his own sports car using the powertrain and chassis parts salvaged from his 1960s Jaguar. Stevens created a tube frame chassis and fitted many of the components from the S-Type. The result of his work was called the Kougar. A pontoon fendered open cockpit which is likened too a 4 wheel motorcycle which is exhilarating to drive!
The design for the Kougar came from the 1950 Healey Silverstone and the pre-war Frazer Nash TT Replica. Another vehicle which lent its lines was the Jaguar-powered HWM racer of the mid-1950s.
An aluminum-bodied Kougar prototype was built in 1976 and then fabricated fiberglass molds to being production. With a plethora of Jaguar donor sedans sitting in garages and scrap yards, Stevens was able to build approximately 315 examples. Most of the Kougars were finished cars but also some were kits.
