Description for Jaguar E-Type 1974

1974 Jaguar XKE convertible V12 with STICK

By 1971 Jaguar XKE's were competing with the V12 Ferrari and the V12 Lamborghinis. It seemed that not only were the V12 smoother than the V8 but it also carried a certain amount of swagger and Jaguar and wanted to be competitive. So in March 1971, Jaguar came out with the Series III Jaguar V12. The whole idea was to have a sport touring car and not a 100% thoroughbred sports car. This of course meant that most of the 12 cylinders were equipped with automatic transmission for the comfort and ease of driving and to effectively make the car a wonderful touring car that could be easily driven all in the family that were not familiar with a manual transmission.

So it was that very few V12 XKE's were fitted with a 4-speed transmission. When they were they kind of developed a raw edge and became a true sports car and not a sport touring car. Now it is almost 50 years later since the Series III came out and the collectors are the ones who are acquiring the V12 Series III XKEs. The collectors seem to be split into two groups. One group wanting the original idea of the XKE V12 being a sports touring car and those that want their V12 raw on the edges which requires a manual transmission. Very few XKE V12's were built with a 4-speed transmission and this is what makes them so rare today.

The Series III roadster in this eBay listing is of course a V12 but most importantly it does have the stick 4-speed transmission. There are definitely more people that want the stick transmission than there are stick transmissions to go around. The Series III in this ad is one of those rare cars and if this is to your taste you should take a hard look at it. It is a desirable color scheme for many with silver paint and red interior. It is in excellent condition and the car owner says the following.

  • Heritage Certificate
  • Power Brakes
  • Power Steering
  • Air conditioning - blows cold
  • Upgraded Bluetooth radio...fits into the original radio space.
  • Gauges work.
  • 44,500 miles on odometer
  • Heater fan is not working; the fuse has been removed.
  • Runs starts and stops just as it should.
  • Front bumpers are European bumpers
  • Bottom of car is very tidy.

Besides all of the above the V12 XKE's have been appreciating at a much faster rate now than the straight sixes. All XKE's have been the flavor of the day for the collectors, of course everybody remembers Mr. Ferrari's first reaction when he saw the first XKE in 1961 was that the Jaguar was "the most beautiful car ever made" — and we're inclined to agree.

So why not get in on the ground floor before these cars become atomically expensive. Purchase one of the really good ones that you will be happy to own and proud to be seen in.
