Description for Jaguar 420 G 1967
1967 Jaguar 420 GThe Jaguar 420 G was the successor to the Jaguar Mark X introduced in 1961 along side the venerable Jaguar XKE. It shared the XKE's 3.8 litre inline six that later grew to to 4.2 litres in the 420 G. As Jaguar's top luxury offering for the decade from 1961 to 1970 it's primary market was the United States and the company hoped to appeal to heads of state, diplomats and film stars.
With technological features like unitized body construction, fully independent rear suspension and triple carburetor dual overhead cam motor, it was an impressive saloon in the British tradition. Ultimately, it was the largest Jaguar produced in the 20th century.
This very straight and exceptionally rust free example had one owner from 1970 until 2019. Per that owner the car was claimed to have been purchased new in Phoenix, Arizona and never left the state during it's existence. The 81 year old owner had lovingly taken care of the vehicle until 2012 when the car was parked and no longer used. The car shows under 95,000 miles which the owner claimed as true and the condition is commiserate. The title is a duplicate that the owner had to get when the original went missing and it does not show the mileage.
After cleaning one fuel tank and addressing fluids and installing a electric fuel pump this car started right up. The carburetorshave not been rebuilt and the tires have flat spots. But it still runs well- no smoke, no unusual engine noise, shifts well and stops well. It stumbles a bit at idle but smooths out above 1500 rpm.
The power windows work but need assistance going up and down. It is a factory A/C car but the compressor and mounts are in the trunk. The evaporator unit behind the rear seat seems to have all the fan functions operable. The windshield has a crack but car comes with a replacement windshield. The radio is a period Motorola upgrade that is not working but comes with several pieces of manufacture's documentation. The original owner's manual and a lubrication location/schedule chart also are included. The original spare, tire jack, and factory tool kit box are present, although all the tools for the kit are not.
At some point in the past the Jaguar received a very mediocre lacquerpaint job in the original dark blue color. The paint is extensively checked and peeling in areas. But underneath the paint the car looks to be very straight and accident free. The rust free condition of the body is extraordinaryfor a British car and reflects it's life in the desert. The interior needs seats redone and wood refinished- the pictures show the condition.
All in all, this car only appeals to a special audience, but for a potential driver, or a full restoration- this car is worthy of any money you would invest. It appears to be mechanically very sound and looks to require a minimum of body work for paint prep. The BIN price is less than half of what low value is on NADA goldbook or Haggerty's valuation.
