Description for Jeep Wrangler 1991

1991 Jeep Wrangler with Ford 5.0 Fuel Injected conversion.

This Jeep began its life as a 2.5l four cylinder. It became a project to replace the anemic 2.5 engine with a larger v-8. So a 5.0 EFI from an early-90's Ford Bronco became the donor to put this vehicle back into better than new condition. The project is 95% done, ut does still have some minor items to complete before it can be considered road/trail worthy. The jeep is drivable, ut not streetable as the engine has a power loss problem at speed (see detail below) therefore the buyer will be responsible for arranging transport by tow or trailer. I have a towbar and tow lights available that I can include for a nominal additional fee if the buyer wishes to tow the vehicle himself. I can assist with tow set up. I do have a clean North Carolina title, owever the Jeep has not been registered.

The Good:

The V8 conversion is virtually complete; all the hard work is done. The conversion was done with the highest amount of care using pre-designed adapters and retaining 100% of the Ford engine wiring and emissions controls so that the vehicle can be recertified for your local emissions testing. Wire harness modifications done with weatherproof but splices and quality Weatherpak connectors. I will include a detailed wiring diagram of all connections so that any future electrical modifications can be easily performed.

The body is in very good condition for its age. There are no major dents or major rust, owever it could use repainting. It is currently an olive colored primer. There is a little surface rust where the paint has worn from the door sills. There are a couple small dents in the lip of the hood from a tow bar being pushed back against it. I had planned to repaint the Jeep to its original gloss black. There are no rust holes. The frame is solid with no rust holes or crash damage as well. The interior carpet has been removed and the interior rhino-lined, hough that has worn through in a few spots and could be touched up. The Driver and Passenger seats are brand new black vinyl Bestop Trailmasters. The folding rear seat is in good condition with no rips or tears, ut has some discoloration from age.

The bad:

As stated, he Jeep is drivable at low speed for short distances, ut lacks power on the road. I have spent countless hours and dollars trying to diagnose the issue but have not found the correct solution. Ultimately, t probably just needs to spend a little time with a qualified Ford Mechanic. At this point I have spent nearly 2 years working on this project and have way more money into it than I will ever see out of it. I just don't have the time to work on it anymore, o rather than have it sit and not go anywhere I am ready to cut my losses and sell the project. I believe that someone with experience with these early '90's ford 5.0 EFI engines can make this thing purr. The enginetest good, as steady vacuum and 120-130 PSI compression on all cylinders. It does not smoke or burn oil. The PCM is throwing codes for Power Steering Pressure Sensor, SS, nd HEGO sensing lean condition. The power steering pressure switch may be bad and there is no VSS presently connected. I believe the lean condition is related to inadequate fuel delivery.

Known Issues:

Lack of power at speed

slight oil leak from rear engine seal

Occasional antifreeze leak from front of engine--doesn't happen always, aven't been able to trace

Slight gear grind when shifting quickly from 1st to 2nd. All other gears are fine.

speedometer is not hooked up

Engine light on for codes explained above.

Tachometer reads 2x actual engine RPM, s it is a 4-cylinder unit but is wired to the 8-cylinder engine.

Stock oil pressure and temperature gauges could not be connected to the Ford sensors, o auxiliary gauges have been fitted. Ammeter, lock, nd fuel gauges work fine.

With a little bit of work I believe that this Jeep can make an excellent road or trail rig. You will not find many v8 jeeps in this year model, s the factory only built 4's and 6's. The advantage of this year model over the older Stock V8 CJ's is the galvanized body, odern sealed electronics, nd fuel injected engine. So once the minor issues are fixed you will have something truly unique, owerful, nd reliable.
