Description for Jeep J10 1986
Selling my 86 Jeep J10. I've owned it for 17 years, 3rd owner. Really nice, harder to find vehicle these days. I had grand designs of a total restoration and customization as I really like these old Jeeps, but I just have never gotten around to it. I've mostly just been maintaining it and occasionally driving it since I bought it.Good stuff - I put new tires on it this year. It also has a new windshield from this year. Last year I replaced the headlight switch, and the fuel filler hoses. Had a carb rebuild several years earlier. Has a factory grille guard that I salvaged from an old full size Cherokee. And the aluminum wheels are from a full size 87 Wagoneer. Has a spare, but it wasn't in the photos. Interior is pretty much stock, and is a bit faded, but in very good shape. I added a tach as well. Engine runs and idles well, and starts up immediately if its been running. 3 speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly - its a 727 according to mechanic I know. Shift on fly Selec-trac 4WD system works fine. Vacuum operated so you have to wait a second or two for it to kick in sometimes. Has a low range lever by the seat/transmission tunnel. Tilt wheel, AC, intermittent wiper and Cruise work. Doesn't really seem to drip or leak much fluid. Front axle is Dana 44, rear is a corporate AMC 20 I believe with 3.31 axle ratio.Though it doesn't say it I believe it was a Pioneer model - the interior is too nice to be the base model. Bed is in very good shape, tailgate as well other than some surface rust. Low miles for its age.
Truck is overall in pretty good shape, for a old Jeep. The body has a few flaws. Due to a recent hail storm it picked up a few new small dents, but they aren't too bad, thanks to the heavy sheet metal. My little Toyota truck parked next to it looks like hell by comparison. The previous owner let a lot of surface rust get started, and since I've had it I've mostly been sanding it down and respraying it to keep the rust mostly at bay. The bed has a little more as you can see in the photos. And the stupid bed seam is showing a little more rust with some bubbling and rust through. Very common with these Jeep trucks. But its not awful. Has a dent in the left rear fender flare. The chrome trim shows a few small dents, one larger - from the hail. Paint is mostly faded black/flat black from my repaints over the years.
Other stuff - as a 31 yr old AMC Jeep, its got its share of quirks - that's called character. And old Jeeps have that by the boxfull. Speedometer cable has a little squeak. Blower motor has a little whir noise. Battery has a slow drain somewhere so I put a quick disconnect on it since I rarely drive it, it's fine for days but if it sits for a long time the battery will be dead. Leaks a little water inside from rain either from door seals and more possibly from the decayed weatherstrip on outside of door to the window (see photo). Could use some exhaust work out back - pretty rotted past the muffler. Transmission clunks when you put it into reverse, but not into drive. Some small tears in drivers side of seat. Missing a chrome trim strip on driver door. Factory radio works great on FM, AM only works when it wants to. I've never tried the cassette player but I'd guess its questionable at best. Clicking noise when driving, that goes away when you touch the brakes - mechanic I know says its probably a anti-chatter spring on front disc brake. If it sits a long time, it takes a while of cranking to get it started. I think the carb goes dry. Starting fluid speeds up the process a lot. Engine occasionally taps a little but then it goes away. Headliner is decent but has some marks and small tears in it. Door locks are kind of stiff. Had a cargo light for bed, but its been missing since before I owned it.
Also comes with factory 86 Jeep manual, and a Haynes service manual. I have a few new spare parts that I'm including - thermostat, radiator hoses, oil filter, 1 spare front amber fender light lens and a few other small miscellaneous parts.
Prior owner installed a set of helper springs I never removed. And a trailer hitch that was welded on custom fabbed setup done at a 4wd shop. I've never pulled a trailer with it so I can't say how solid it is.
Nice old Jeep. I'd like to keep it but since it mostly just sits, I think its time to sell it to someone who can put it to better use. Drive it as is, do a total restoration or even go wild with customizing. These hard to find trucks have a lot of style and potential. A black diamond in the rough.
