Description for Jeep CJ 1986
1986 Jeep CJ7 "Liberty Edition" with just 6,196 original miles! What is the "Liberty Edition" CJ7? The Liberty Edition was a very limited package only available for late model 1986 CJ7s. They were only offered in the later part of 1986 CJ7 production, so they all have the desirable Dana 44 rear axle. Jim Allen of Four Wheeler Magazine (and one of the most respected Jeep experts in the world) wrote " Your query to Four Wheeler got shuttled to me but I can't tell you much more than you already know. I have seen one Liberty Edition recently, a red one, though I don't have much documentation on them. Generally I can say they were either a national or regional SPO (Special Production Order) offered to dealers. Sometimes these specials appeared in only one part of the country. Sometimes only at one dealer (usually a big one in that case... I have seen some unique ones from a Denver dealer). Basically, they ordered up a bunch of jeeps with certain trim and equipment levels, added some special decals (sometimes installed at the dealer level) and there you go. Like you said, it appears the LIberty Editions were '86s and came with red or white exterior paint (lI have seen pics of a white one) and with a Garnet Red interior. It's interesting to note that the one I saw was in southern Wisconsin, not all that far from Indiana. As a collectable, they would be a bit more valuable than an equivalent standard model, but the condition of the decals is paramount to any premium over a standard Jeep. They would make an interesting variation for a serious late CJ collector but probably not a high dollar unit in and of itself."
This is a remarkable Jeep. One of the lowest mileage CJs in the country. I will be as thorough and honest with my vehicle disclosure as possible. Overall, I'd rate this Jeep a solid 9-9.5/10, and I'm extremely anal with my CJs! This Jeep has been in the garage all of it's life and you can tell! Look at the color on the gauges, uncracked dash pad, seat material, etc. No fading. This Jeep will not disappoint!
BODY/TUB (EXTERIOR): Extremely nice, vibrant Sebring Red 3B original paint! The body is unbelievably nice, but not perfect. This Jeep sports all of its original paint, and has incredible luster. There is a small dent that was touched up on the driver side of the hood (see photo) and there are 2 small dents on the cowl area by the fresh air intake, which appear to be small hail dents. There are some scratches on this Jeep, but they are not noticeable from 4 feet. The previous owner put some sort of European "badge" on the driver side of the Jeep close to the lady liberty emblem. This required two 1/8" holes to be drilled in to the side of the tub. The badge has been removed (and is in the glove box of the Jeep should you decide to reinstall), and the holes have been plugged with color matched plugs (see photo). This Jeep was a ranch vehicle for it's first couple years of life, then was barely used after that as the owners retired from the ranching industry. I had my detailer take all the seats out, dash pad off, etc. and perform a very thorough detail on this Jeep. Look at the undercarriage and you'll see the CORRECT factory primer with overspray. This is exactly how these Jeeps left the factory!
FRAME: The frame, engine, transmission, transfer case are all remarkable. There is absolutely zero rust anywhere. The frame is still a deep black factory color, and has no fading, . This Jeep does not leak fluid anywhere.
BODY/TUB (INTERIOR): As you can see, this inside of the tub is remarkable. Zero rot or rust anywhere on the floors, and the paint is not worn down either. The original roll bar was modified by a previous owner. Not sure why, but they decided to cut the original roll bar and weld a triangular pad to the bottom, then mounted it to the rear fender. I ended up removing/discarding the modified original roll bar and and installed an extremely nice OEM early take off. Of course I had it professionally painted, and it matches perfectly. I'm just disclosing this to you so you know why the fenders have a couple of small holes drilled in to them. The inside of the tailgate does have some scratches, but no dents.
ENGINE / DRIVE TRAIN: Take a look at the engine compartment! Probably the nicest engine bay I've ever seen. Everything appears to be original except for the fuel filter. This Jeep still has all of its original hoses, and they're in amazing condition. Automatic transmission is a plus (to me at least...other's prefer a manual). This Jeep runs, idles, and drives like a new vehicle. I would not be apprehensive about driving this Jeep across the country. To see a video of the engine running, please go to YouTube and type this in the search block: oyTu94ni5Wc (eBay no longer allows clickable links).
SOFT TOP: This Jeep comes with a brand new era-correct Bestop "Replace A Top". It is used with the OEM Whitco soft top frame. I replaced the OEM Whitco soft top because there was a small hole on the top. It is repairable with a patch, but I have not attempted repair on it. Other than this hole, the original Whitco black soft top is in MINT condition. The Whitco emblem on the side of the soft top is not faded. I left the original door skins on the Jeep as they're in nice shape, but will include the Bestop brand new door skins, bows, and also the original Whitco soft top with the sale of this vehicle.
INTERIOR: The interior is extremely nice! The original garnet dash pad does not have a scratch, dent, or crack on it! The visors appear to have zero fading, and are not torn, cracked, etc. Overall, the seats are remarkable, but the back side of the driver seat does have a small burn from a cigarette or something. Though not necessary, this is repairable if you find OEM garnet material, which is out there. The back seat is a "fold and tumble", and is in very nice shape. The seats have extremely minimal, if any, wear on the bottoms, bolsters, etc. Overall, I'd rate the interior as excellent.
ELECTRICAL: Everything works as it should. All gauges, wipers, turn signals, hazards, etc. are in perfect working order.
TIRES: This Jeep is on its second set of tires, and they're in very nice shape with tons of life left on them. I was told they were replaced because the originals dry rotted over time. The original factory spare tire is still on the Jeep, and appears to have never been used.
I consider myself a brutally honest person. I make this Jeep sound much worse than it is, but I'm very picky. I'll let the pictures tell the story and you can judge for yourself. Remember, it is 32 years old and has a history. You'll be hard pressed to find a better original Jeep than this one, and next to impossible to find a ticker with this low of miles!!
