Description for Jeep CJ 1978

This auction is for one fiberglass body 1978 Jeep CJ5, for parts or restoration.

As you may know, I try to describe anything I'm selling as best I can, with as much detail as I can, to avoid disappointment to anyone.

Jeep is 4WD, Warn front hubs, has an inline 6 cylinder 258 engine (unsure if Ford or AMC, likely Ford) with Ford ignition module (Motorcraft 12A199), a T-18 4 speed manual, and a Dana 20 transfer case.

Full fiberglass body (gel coat red with black interior). Fiberglass fenders and hood. Metal grill. Power steering but not power brakes.

Starts, runs, drives, and with good power... good compression (approx. 135 lbs on each cylinder), clutch and brakes feel good, good amount of brake pads left. Brake hoses good. Alternator charges battery.

Exhaust system is older, mild rust, any joint leaks from "custom job" welding job have been repaired with muffler patch or metal collars from engine to back section of exhaust (just past seats). Muffler works, no holes.

See new parts & caveats below.

Frame appears to have been POR-15'd... but see caveats.

Existing tires are marked "33 x 12.50 R15 LT" BF Goodrich Radial All Terrain T/A.They hold air, however they are showing tiny cracks (good as shop tires).

This auction includes some top frame sections (side sections?) and newer black vinyl / soft doors (email me over eBay for photos).

Red roll bar lagged into fiberglass body.

Oil pressure gauge works and is temporarily suspended from under the dash. Voltmeter works, but is out of the car.

Used parts included:

Points type 1970 distributor, cap, rotor, points

New parts (approx over $3k in new parts) included in this sale (some not shown in photos):

New windshield frame (not shown in photos)

New windshield and gasket, still in box(not shown in photos)

New stainless steel dash board, with ignition switch hole nicely drilled (see photo)

New Ignition switch (temp installation, see photos)

Newer battery

New windshield bolts and hinges (not installed)

New last section of exhaust system (not installed, see photo).

New complete set of OEM Jeep repair manuals (reprints of Vols 1, 2, & 3) and one additional older copy of Vol 1 that has the fold out wiring diagram (no photo)

New slider control cables and knobs set (not installed, dash out, not in photos)

New warning and indicator lights set (not installed, dash out,not in photos)

New battery support tray, aftermarket and sitting much lower than OEM (see photo)

New plugs, distributor, plug wires installed.

New fuel and vacuum hoses installed.

New brake light switch (behind pedal) installed.

Repainted 4WD shifter knob.

New rear light (both) assemblies installed.

New front signal light lenses.

Speedometer has been restored, is hanging suspended for now.

I think I have new windshield wiper motor and gasket for it... but don’t hold me to it!

New fuel filters installed.

New Sun visors (tan).

New mirrors (not installed, still in box). Old mirrors are off car.

New ballast resistor of proper Ohm value.

New and / or restored shifter rubber bellows (not installed, one for each shifter).

Caveats:

Black vinyl seats are in good condition but don't have head rests.Driver seat back bent a bit.

Has lap belts.

Frame needs rust repair in left rear section (typical place, and there are prefabricated sections and approved installers for these kits), and it could use a rear bumper back /cross bar. (about $300 in parts).

Steering wheel works, but horn assembly is off.

Best to get a tilt steering column ($250). Ignition switch has been relocated from steering column to dashboard.

Gas tank is good, but was removed to assist frame repair section. A small portable gas can is being used to move Jeep as needed.

The new windshield frame and new stainless steel dashboard are off the Jeep. Original dash included, but rusty.

Carter single barrel carb marked "0-2425", and gasket leaks mildly.

No top included in this auction.

Fiberglass body in generally good condition, generally good color, but some hairline cracks on hood.See photos. One photo shows area behind hood half waxed, other half without wax (some oxide).

Wiring for instruments and indicators seems working, may need some updating.

Rear light wiring and gas tank indicator wiring is there, some new wire sections, needs completion.

Steering gear rubber gasket is broken (but gear works fine in manual mode).

Power steering pump may work, but needs new hoses.

Best to replace the belts and hoses, although they appear in fair condition.

Carb cold idle mechanism disconnected, was in the process of converting to a manual choke.

Front bumper not painted, yet not rusted yet!

Jeep has been stored indoors for approx. last 12 years.
