Description for Jeep Commando 1970
1970 Jeepster Commando with the original 225-V6 Dauntless engine. 3-speed on the floor. 4wd. Dana 44 rear axle. and Dana 30 front. A Commando in this condition. both mechanically and cosmetically. is hard to find! This Commando was originally purchased in Las Cruces. NM and has always been in New Mexico’s dry climate. I have some of the original records including the Owner’s Manual and Maintenance Plan. It is in very good shape and was repainted about 9-years ago by the previous owner. There doesn't appear to be any rust. There is some minor paint flaking on the hood in two places and around the cowl. Other than that. the paint is shiny and the body is very straight. The odometer reads 90. 00 miles and according to the title it’s the original mileage. The engine has not been rebuilt and it is still strong - although it does have some blow-by. It has custom dual exhausts with “Golden Turbo” mufflers. A fuse box was added at some point and the wiring diagram is included. About 5-years and 4. 00 miles ago I redid the interior. I replaced the seats and belts with bucket seats out of a Dodge Durango and I made the mounts so I didn't have to drill new holes. I also insulated the floor and ceiling. carpeted the floor. recovered the headliner. installed a console on the floor and a console on the ceiling from a 1992 Cherokee with lights. compass and thermometer (see pictures). It has an Alpine stereo/CD player. I replaced the vinyl dash and the armrests with original equipment. The pictures show the interior with the Durango seats. mounts and console. Notice one of the pictures shows the floor before re-carpeting and there is not any rust! It has five very nice Boyd’s mag wheels. The Michelin radial tires are in great shape with only about 12. 00 miles on them. I recently added another rear leaf spring because the originals were sagging. The records I have indicate that the transmission. transfer case. and both axles were rebuilt around 65. 00 miles by Savoie’s Truck Service in Albuquerque. I put a clutch in it at 87. 00 miles. The rear Dana 44 differential has a Tru-Trac differential. This Commando drives nice and the interior is quiet since I insulated it. She’s in good condition and needs a new home. The warts:The dash was cut by a previous owner to fit a larger radio. I installed a new radio and cleaned up the cut so that it is not apparent. (A power cutoff switch was installed on the radio so that it does not drain the battery when not driven regularly. )The carburetor requires pumping and a full choke to start. Once warmed up she runs fine. The engine runs strong but does have some blow-by. Some paint flaking on the hood. The Jeep has two. dealer add-on. 8-gallon saddle tanks. but the fuel pump is not strong enough to pick-up fuel from either one.
