The Series Land Rovers are off-road vehicles conceived by the Rover Company in 1947 in the aftermath of World War II. It was intended to be a light agricultural and utility vehicle similar to the US-built Willys Jeep used in the war. The Land Rover was originally intended to be produced for just two or three years to gain cash flow for the Rover Company after the war so it could restart its higher-end car production. The Land Rover was so successful that it developed into its own brand that remains successful today.

Many of the Land Rover’s successful features and defining characteristics were actually a result of simplifying production tooling and materials due to post-war rationing. These features include the use of aluminum alloy bodywork versus steel, istinctively flat body panels with only simple, onstant radius curves that could be cut and hand formed on a basic jig, nd the sturdy box-section ladder chassis made of four strips of steel welded at each side which simplified the welding process.

The Land Rover Series III was launched in 1971 as a replacement to the IIA with a total production of 440,000 through 1985. Mechanical changes to the Series III included a raise in compression to the 2.25L engine and synchromesh on all four gears in its transmission. The interior saw a new molded plastic dash covering in place of the previous metal dashboard and the instrument cluster, reviously centrally located, as moved to the driver’s side. As in previous Series models, he Land Rover was available in the 88-inch short wheel base and the 109-inch long wheel base.

This superb collection example is a 1974 Land Rover Series III 88-inch SWB, erial number 25903142B, ith a 2.25L gasoline powered inline 4 cylinder with the 4-speed manual transmission, -speed manual transfer box, nd selectable 4-wheel-drive. The engine has been enhanced from the stock 73 hp unit to a 2.25L Inline-4 Cylinder engine from renowned Turner Engineering producing 120 hp. It also features an electronic ignition, igh performance intake system comprised of a Weber 32/36 DGV 2-barrel carburetor and Pierce intake manifold, nd a custom header and exhaust system. Suspension has been improved with Old Man Emu gas shocks and TI Console parabolic springs. A Fairey overdrive provides a 27.8% increased road speed at same engine speed which increases fuel economy and decreases mechanical wear. It has also been fitted with 16” wheels including the spare.

Detailed service records and parts receipts dating back to 2001 document the care it has received. This includes maintenance work such as brake jobs, ub seals, xhaust, ransmission work, nd alignments to minor upgrades and improvements that enhance the appearance and functionality such as extra lighting, etal tread plate guards, ide steps, ud flaps, eat cushions, nd even a set of front and rear custom Cocomat floor mats made by hand from the cured husks of coconuts. It also includes both the black, anvas Soft Top and a painted, indowed Deluxe Safari Roof with rear door and glass window panels. A set of owners and workshop manuals are also includes. To complete the safari look and utility along with the tools, undles of rope, upplementary driving lights, etal guards, nd metal grill, he side doors have been adorned with a vinyl decal depicting the Zimbabwe Coat of Arms which features their national motto of “Unity, reedom, ork”.
