Description for Land Rover Other 1967
Up for sale is my 1967 Land Rover Series IIa. 88” short wheelbase (SWB) ‘station wagon’ with the tropical roof. VIN is 31802668C. manufactured in Solihull. England. It is a left-hand drive vehicle. made for the US market. Land Rover Series IIa is an iconic vehicle. and this one has many desirable features including the removable hard top. overdrive. and a mechanical restoration. This Land Rover has a fully rebuilt 2. 25 liter gas engine (4 cylinder) that is converted for unleaded gas. The engine is strong and steady. with a smooth idle and 110 psi compression on all cylinders. The Land Rover has its original 4-speed transmission. as well as a Fairey Overdrive (essentially a 5th gear) enabling the truck to drive at higher speeds. A plethora of shift knobs connect to the functional high and low range 4x4. While the truck wears its patina well. under the skin this Land Rover has been mechanically restored to factory condition. I made significant effort to maintain originality by avoiding popular and often misunderstood modifications (e. g. parabolic springs. free-wheel hubs. etc. ). but I did incorporate a few discrete upgrades (e. g. updated type oil seals. hardened valve seats for unleaded gas. etc. ). Most of the original parts were carefully disassembled. sandblasted. primed. painted. and reinstalled with new grade-8 hardware. Factory specifications (Green Bible) were used when setting torques. adjustments. tolerances. etc. The frame and outriggers were cleaned. inspected. and painted; no rust or damage was found on the frame and outriggers. which are original. The swivel balls and related seals. gaskets. bearings. etc. have all been replaced with new parts. Hoses. gaskets. all fluids. oil seals. hardware. common wear items. bearings. bulbs. wiring. etc. have all been replaced. A significant amount of work went into this truck. with an eye on originality. and maintaining its outward patina. Now I know why they say that Land Rover is not just a vehicle. but a way of life. The Land Rover runs great but it likes to warm up first (common with any vehicle of this vintage). It shifts well. the transfer case and 4x4 work great. the overdrive works great. While this truck won’t set any speed records. it has a bombproof feel to it. I get more ‘thumbs-up’ from people in this truck than any other vehicle I have owned. For what it’s worth. this Land Rover took second place in its class at the 2104 All British Field Meet in Portland. OR. I have not done any serious off-road driving. and judging by the great condition of the frame and other components. it has had an easy life. According to the person I bought the truck from (who lives in Bend. Oregon). this truck came from California and is 99. 5% rust free. While there is a small amount of cosmetic surface rust here and there on the bulkhead. but really it just adds to the character of the truck’s rugged appearance. I do point out a smallish rust hole in the passenger side bulkhead which has been sanded down and sealed. It’s cosmetic. but I thought I should mention it (see the photos). The Land Rover fires right up with a little choke. and runs very well. It is a nearly 50 year old off-road vehicle. so don’t expect a speed demon! The Land Rover shifts well. and is happy cruising along. It’s worth mentioning that there is no syncro between first and second gear in the Land Rover (they were made this way). but you get used to this pretty fast and the double clutching becomes second nature. The brakes work well. but they are single circuit drum brakes that don’t exactly stop on a dime (they perform to original specification. but are quite different from brakes on modern vehicles). I don’t mean to scare you. all of this is part of the charm. it’s great to drive. and besides. what is the rush because getting there is most of the fun? To me. the faded Marine Blue patina of this truck is awesome. I am not a fan of vintage Land Rovers that have a fresh paint job. but that is personal preference. The Land Rover could be easily painted to ‘complete’ the restoration if you want to go that route. Since all the mechanical components and frame have been painted. it wouldn’t take much to paint the body and update the interior a bit resulting in a glossy restoration. Below is a narrative of work done to the Land Rover and while the truck is not perfect. it is very mechanically sound. I think it is fine as-is. and drive it confidently as such. but the following list of items could be addressed as time allows. None of these are critical. but I thought I should mention them up front: Headliner is in rough shape. but patched up well enough (in my opinion anyway) using white gorilla tape. I drove the Land Rover mostly with the top off. so I didn’t fret over the headliner. Many of the interior trim pieces are not installed. but are included. Horn is not installed. but is included. Door seals need to be replaced. and the new replacements are included. Window channels need to be replaced (though the windows do open as-is). and the new replacements are included. Passenger side windshield wiper does not work (but can be manually actuated as necessary). Fuel gauge always reads full. even when the tank is not. I just keep it topped up. but this is likely a grounding problem somewhere in the sender/gauge wiring. The leaf spring bushings have not been replaced. The rear door latch does not actuate from inside. There are some small oil leaks. maybe a few drops here and there even though the seals and gaskets have been replaced…after all. it is British. The Land Rover is currently registered in Oregon. to me. I have the title. and it is clear. I have insurance on the Land Rover. I am happy to show the vehicle to serious buyers. The engine rebuild and install happened in Spring 2014. and I have been driving the truck since then. In total. I put around 500 miles on the Land Rover. mostly around town and out on local country roads. The Land Rover is sold as-is. with no warranty expressed or implied. I’m selling the Land Rover (and my other vehicles) because we just had our first baby! The original 2. 25 liter gas (petrol) engine was fully rebuilt by a local machine shop. Before the rebuild started. the engine was fully degreased and checked for cracks. etc. Cylinders were bored out to 0. 020” oversized and new pistons sourced from Rovers North were installed. The crankshaft was ground to 0. 010” undersize. and new rod and main bearings were installed. New wrist pin bushings were also installed. New cam bearings were installed. and the original camshaft was inspected and found suitable for reuse. New crankshaft thrust washers were installed. A new crankshaft pulley was installed. The rocker arm was disassembled. cleaned. and reinstalled. The original lifters/rollers were cleaned. inspected. and reused. During the rebuild. the cylinder head was resurfaced and new valves. guides. and valve stem seals were installed by the machine shop. They also installed hardened exhaust seats so that the engine can now run unleaded gas. I run mid-grade for the higher octane rating. New timing chain. tensioner. gears. and the updated style front main seal were installed. The timing cover was modified by the popular method to make future front main seal changes very easy (swapping rivets for screws). Ask for details if you are interested. An updated rear main seal was also installed. Oil pan baffles were removed to allow thorough cleaning of the pan. and were then reinstalled. The oil pump was cleaned and refurbished with new seals. spring. ball. etc. A new oil pressure sending unit (idiot light) was installed. and works well. All gaskets. crush washers. seals. o-rings. suds. bolts. motor mounts. etc. were replaced during the rebuild. All parts were either replaced. or cleaned. painted (where appropriate). reinstalled. At the recommendation of the machine shop. engine break-in used Joe Gibbs break-in motor oil. The motor oil and filter were changed recently. and the engine now runs Valvoline VR-1 10w30 motor oil (which contains the zinc and other compounds necessary for this type of engine). A new water pump. heater bypass hose. radiator hoses. fan belt. thermostat. hose clamps. and Series III radiator were installed. The Land Rover does not have a heater (they were sold without heaters. these are something you would add on if desired. and are commonly available from many vendors). In the fuel system. the fuel pump was replaced. an additional fuel filter was installed (disposable type). fuel lines were replaced. The carburetor was rebuilt by the previous owner and runs well. Carburetor gaskets. intake/exhaust manifold gasket. fuel pump gaskets were all replaced. I had Mac’s Radiator boil out the gas tank and re-line it. Both the fuel gauge and sending unit were replaced. but don’t work at this time (the gas gauge always reads full). A new exhaust system was installed. including manifold. header pipe. intermediate pipe. muffler. and tailpipe. All gaskets were replaced with new gaskets. and new mounting hardware was installed. The exhaust is quiet compared to other Rovers I’ve seen. A new Lucas distributor was installed. as well as new cap. rotor. points. condenser. plug wires. plugs. coil (Bosch blue coil). The original starter was refurbished with new brushes and all battery/ground cables were replaced. I retained the original remote starting solenoid (works great and super cool!). The Land Rover has a large starting/deep-cycle battery from Costco. A new 3-wire alternator was installed and is hooked up to the charging indicator light. The charging system runs at just over 14 volts. I also installed an updated alternator bracket from Pangolin 4x4. The ball joints and tie-rod ends were replaced. and the steering was aligned at a professional alignment shop. On the front axle. the swivel balls. bearings. u-joints. seals. etc… were all replaced. The swivel ball housings are filled with the updated Land Rover ‘one-shot’ grease. On the rear axle. all the bearings. seals. etc. were replaced. New shocks and limiting straps were installed. Note that the leaf springs and leaf spring bushings were not replaced. All u-joints were replaced. Front and rear differential pinion seals were replaced with updated type oil seals. New oil was installed everywhere: differential. transmission. transfer case. overdrive. steering relay. engine. etc… A new clutch. pressure plate. throw-out bearing. and flywheel bushing were installed. The flywheel was surfaced at the machine shop prior to installation. While the transmission was out of the truck. it was degreased. and resealed with new gaskets and oil seals. The brake system was fully rebuilt. new solid pipes and flex-lines were installed. the master cylinder was rebuilt and set to factory specification. all the wheel cylinders were rebuilt as well. A few new brake shoes and drums were installed. The brake fluid reservoir was replaced with a two-chamber reservoir that keeps clutch and brake fluids separate (a wise safety upgrade). The clutch master/slave cylinders were rebuilt. and the flex hose was replaced. The emergency brake was also rebuilt with new shoes. I had the original 15” wheels sandblasted and powder coated in the original color (limestone). I installed a de-studded set of Toyo Hypraradial snow tires LT235/75R15. they are a very high quality tire and work great! All the tires hold air and are nearly brand new (lots of tread remaining). These tires are great for both on-road and off-road use. and have an aggressive tread pattern. The spare is a different brand of tire. Bridgestone I think. and retains some of the writing from the tire shop (the white ‘graffiti’ you see in the photos). I forgot to clean that off before taking the photos. A new wiring harness (full harness) was installed. New brake/tail/turn signal lamp housings/lenses were installed (the newer Land Rover Defender type). The original horn is not installed but is included. The speedometer was rebuilt at a professional speedometer shop. and a new speedometer cable was installed. New seat belts were installed for the driver and passenger seats. New boots were installed around the various shift and e-brake levers. Vent screens work well and have been painted. I have not hooked up the interior dome light. All three door panels are the original Elephant hide material. and while ratty. are very functional. Note that the rear door handle does not work from the inside. I installed deluxe seats in the front (Series III type). They are very comfortable. Unfortunately. a neighborhood cat scratched up the seat backs. They are still very usable. but the scratches are noticeable. The seat bottoms were not damaged. There is a new fold-up bench seat in the rear. as well as a wooden storage box that was installed by the previous owner. All of the glass is in good condition. no cracks or chips. The original crank handle is included (stored behind the seat). Also. a lug wrench and bottle jack are included. but they were not original to the Land Rover. A couple boxes of various spare parts will be included. The aluminum body panels are in OK shape. but there are some small-to-medium dings and scrapes. Personally. I think it adds to the rugged character. and invites the driver to go off-road. The upper panel of the tropical roof has been patched as you can see in the photos. This upper panel is only to reflect sunlight. and sits above the actual roof. The actual roof is in great condition. I ran the truck with the top removed all summer. and installed a used tail gate. which is included. The mounting hardware for the tailgate is currently installed on the truck so swapping between hard top and tailgate is a relatively quick and painless process. I had the driver side windshield wiper motor rebuilt. and it works great. The passenger side wiper motor does not work but I’m fairly certain it just needs new brushes. Both sides have new wiper arms and blades. Many other small parts were replaced. too many to list. Examples include suspension parts. body grommets. interior bits. most of the hardware. small springs. rubber parts. fluids. seals. crush washers. wiring. bulbs. etc. You get the idea.
