1956 Lincoln Continental Mark II Derham badged

Here at MissChiTown, marketing service on eBay for car collectors, e very often like to give a little historical background on the cars that we market for other collectors. So before we go into the information provided from the private seller about his fabulous 1956 Lincoln Mark II we want to give you a little background on why this particular Lincoln should appear to be so special.

Before World War II the top manufacturers like Packard, adillac, hrysler and Lincoln would use one of the many custom coach builders to put bodies on their chassis for their top high end cars. After World War II, ost of these coachbuilders were out of business but one still remained. This company was name Derham and they continued after World War II to do custom bodies and custom work on production cars. Ford Motor Company continued to use Derham Coach Works for many of the very special show cars and for important celebrity cars like the Lincoln Continental Mark II convertible. The car in this ad has the Derham emblem that would indicate that the car was sent to Derham for the padded top and other accent pieces such as the sill plates.

It is well known that the first Lincoln Mark IIs were basically hand built at Lincoln but to have a custom coachbuilder add its finishing touches to the Lincoln Continental Mark II production car is really a very rare item. We suggest that you check out the Derham emblems and the padded top. It is our understanding that this car was originally black but may have been painted dark green by Derham or possibly by an owner thereafter. It has also been rumored that this car was made for one of the members of the Ford family but there is absolutely no documentation for that nor is there paper documentation from Derham.

The following paragraph will provide some information taken from the Internet on the production Lincoln Continental Mark II. The appeal of the Lincoln Continental Mark II resulted with famous owners that included Elvis Presley, rank Sinatra, lizabeth Taylor, he Shah of Iran and some of the wealthiest people in the United States. The Mark II sold for around $10,000 but Ford estimated that they still lost over a thousand dollars per car on the 3,000 that were built.

After WWII the competition between General Motors, ord and Chrysler intensified. Ford's styling department was directed to come up with a high end, ersonal car that would be the continuation of the Lincoln Continental produced from 1939 through 1948, his of course was prompted by Harley Earls styling department coming up with some fantastic designs of their own and Ford wanted to remain competitive. The result of this mix of competition and the desire to continue the heritage of the Lincoln Continental resulted in the Lincoln Continental Mark II.

The 1956 Mark II that appears in this auction has a full padded top and Derham emblems, t is believed that this work was done by Derham. Currently the car is in presentable cosmetic condition with some minor chips and scuffs on the exterior along with a presentable interior. The car is a long way from being a show car but because of its Derham labels it could be considered one of the top ten rarest Lincoln Mark IIs that exist. This Lincoln of course is equipped like all Lincoln Continentals with Power Steering, ower Brakes, ower Windows and Power Seats. The 361 Lincoln engine and automatic transmission. The car is also equipped with air conditioning but it is not currently blowing cold.

The private seller tells us that he was told that the car was originally a display vehicle and was shipped in October 1955 to an address in Santa Barbara, A. It appears to have had only one repaint.

There are many collectors that consider the Lincoln Mark II to be one of the finest American automotive production designs in the twentieth century. This is the opinion of some but most would agree that it is truly a fabulous sculpture for a car design. It is our opinion at MissChiTown and we are car collectors ourselves besides being a marketing arm for car collectors who want to sell their cars on eBay. While we expect to see all Lincoln Mark IIs rapidly appreciating in the future this one should be at the head of the class because of the Derham badging. While the paint is acceptable for street and touring purposes, new paint could really sharpen the car up. If you are a foreign bidder kindly contact us to get clearance for bidding.
