Description for Lincoln Continental 1958

The 1958 Lincoln Continental Mark III Convertible was all-new for 1958. It was of all-new unibody construction for 1958. featuring an all steel body with welded double panel doors. It was one of the largest post-war American cars ever built and was beautifully proportioned. With newly-styled bodywork. the car featured bullet-shaped moldings and additional trim that both lowered and lengthened the car’s appearance. Mechanically. the 1958 Continental Mark III experienced a major boost in power over its predecessor. with a new 430-cubic inch (7. 0 litre OHV V8) base engine rated at an impressive 350 brake horsepower. Power was transmitted to the rear wheels via a 3-speed Turbo-Drive Automatic transmission. Other mechanical features were independent front suspension with coil springs. wishbones. and a live rear axle with leaf springs. and four-wheel hydraulically-actuated drum brakes. The new Mark III was bigger and more expensive ($6. 23) and larger than the comparable Cadillacs or Chrysler Imperial. Only 3. 48 units were produced. making them rare to find these days and highly collectible. This particular car is recently out of a CA collection and she is an excellent example of a rare and collectible piece of American history. She wears her original yellow CA license plates. Her mileage was reported to us as original. We also have the original build sheets for her as well as her original owner's manual. Please view the photos. The prior owner reported that it was all original. EXCEPT -- -- some touch up paint was used when putting the hood back on after a radiator replacement. -- center of air filter cover had a small scratch and it was repainted. -- red leather on front seat at legs was replaced with correct material. Extra material remains with the car. The red leather on the bottom of the rear seat remains original. as is the white portion. nbsp;and they both show some patina. A new owner may wish to use the matching red leather material that's included to replace the original red leather. However. we think it looks great the way it is and chose to leave it because as the saying goes. something is only original once. As you turn the ignition key she starts promptly and runs smoothly and has lots of power as one would expect from a well cared for classic. The mechanical aspects work well. such as the transmission shifting like it should. the brakes operating properly and the steering and suspension also functioning as intended. She runs down the road very well indeed. The former owner also mentioned the following:"The convertible top material IS ORIGINAL. Do not replace! Why? this car is the ONLY one I have seen with the Lincoln logo on the back sides. New material does not have it and due to the creasing of the top at that point. it can't be painted on. "This was also mentioned about the top:"Open top when material is warm (in the sun for awhile) makes it easier for system to fold top into its compartment (pontoons and trim are in the trunk w/original sleeves). After the trunk opens there may be a pause before the top starts to lift away from the windshield. finess the system by opening/closing and step on gas somewhat to get the system really charged. IT ALL WORKS. "There's a retractable rear window that slides out of sight with just a flick of the switch to give open car ventilation. and this functions just as it should. All the power accessories work. even the power vent windowsThe paint is in great condition and shines well. but it's not showroom new upon closer inspection. If inspected carefully. one might note some paint crazing in a few areas. as well as some small nicks that have been touched up several places. as well as a couple areas along the top crease of the front fenders where someone may have been over zealous with a power buffer and the white paint has been slightly burned through. If one isn't looking for such things they likely won't be noticable to the average eye but we want to fully disclose any flaws we are aware of. Under the two corners of the hood next to the windshield are factory access plates that were coated with some sort of tar-like substance from the factory and then painted over from the factory. These areas show some age and cracking of the paint/coating. however be assured there is no rust. Otherwise. the body paint still shines very well and looks great. The chrome and bright work sparkle. The massive bumpers. intricate rear tailight and front grille pieces look spectacular. The exterior lighting works as it should too. even the back-up lights. Looking inside. note the crack-free dash pad and crack-free plastic/glass cover over the main gauge cluster. This gauge cover often develops a vertical crack in these models. but this one is as-new. The carpets are in great condition. as are the door panels and other parts of the dash as well as the interior top bows. interior trim. door sill plates. glove box and sun visors. The original leather seat upholstery looks stunning in red/black/white tri-tone. Interior and accessorty lighting also functions as it should. The trunk is properly trimmed as original and includes an original jack with instructions. Did we mention that she is also fitted with Air Conditioning. and it works as intended. This is an excellent and mostly original example of a rare and milestone American luxury convertible. She's an original CA car and we have her build sheet and an original set of keys. She's dressed in the proper color combination of white over red/black/white and is ready for her next caretaker. Bid with confidence. and be sure to view the photos and videos.
