Description for Lotus Other 1966
You are bidding on a 1966 Lotus Cortina, one of 225 imported to the USA that year. It has undergone a complete, authentic, rotisserie restoration 3 years ago, and has been driven (by me only) about 5,000 miles since then. In doing the restoration, we duplicated how the car would have looked when it left the factory. The correct shades of green and white were used, the green paint lines are exactly where they would have been placed at the factory. The hand-painted black areas behind the grill are just as they would have been done at the factory. All the correct clips, hose clamps, emblems, etc, are present. There are a couple things I've changed over the past few years for convenience more than anything else. These include 1) attaching a separate starter solenoid to the firewall behind the rear carb like on the English Lotus Cortinas because it is nearly impossible to change the starter with the solenoid mounted on top of it like the original US spec ones; 2) I changed the driveshaft from a 2-piece to a 1-piece one, but I still have the 2-piece one with all its fittings and it goes with the car if the new owner wants it; 3) I added an electric fuel pump, mounted near the rear axle, that is operated by a toggle switch below the glovebox to fill the carbs with gas when the car hasn't been driven for several days so that it will start right up even after it's been sitting for awhile. The engine number is LP5632LB-A, which I believe is original for the car. All the spinning engine components were balanced when it was rebuilt so that it runs very smooth. The transmission is the original close-ratio one that came with it when new. It still has its original 40DCOE 18 carbs too. The engine starts right up immediately, even without using the choke. I've heard that you have to keep the revs up to keep these engines running, but this one is not like that at all. It idles smoothly at about 800 RPMs. I keep close tabs on the gas mileage of cars I own and this one gets a steady 32 MPG on regular 87 octane gas without any pinging or other problems.
Everything works on the car, but both the tachometer and speedometer read higher than actual and could stand to be recalibrated. The odometer is 100% accurate, however.
If you have any questions, you can use eBay's "Ask Seller a Question" box. If you'd like to come and look the car over, it's located in Brunswick, GA, and I will be happy to show it. If the new buyer wants to fly in and drive it home to someplace like California, it will easily make the trip.
