Description for Lotus Esprit 1988
Offered for sale, from KURT TANNER MOTORCARS, is this desirable black Peter Stevens Esprit Turbo Coupe. This car was just purchased from it's owner in the state of Kansas who had the car garaged and tinkered with it over the past 10 years. Today, the car runs and drives well but could benefit from a recent full service and some minor turbo wastegate work. The car is an attractive driver in it's original-looking cosmetics. The bodywork on this car is close to perfect with nice factory gapping all the way around, very good opening and closing panels, and 100% original Triplex quality glass all in good condition. There's some evidence of light typical fiberglass stress cracks associated with a black Lotus of this age/era that has been enjoyed. Paintwork is now showing some of it's age in the form of some general light spidering, thinning/lifting clearcoat, various small chips and light scratches from normal use. Nevertheless, the car is very attractive from 10 feet and is the perfect "non-perfect" driver in this handsome black color scheme. The passenger door mirror needs some attention/ re-mounting.The car's interior looks lovely and highly original throughout, testament to the car's original recorded mileage. Seats are excellent and inviting in their original factory leather covers. The door panels look original and crisp. Carpets are amazingly very nice and in their original factory material, as well as the car's headliner. The black dashboard is in very good condition but is just showing some light lifting at the front, towards the windshield.Mechanically, the car starts immediately on the key and sounds excellent once warmed up. There is no smoke or unwelcome noises. The turbo is working correctly, and the wastegate valve was removed and the carbon was cleaned. The wastegate diaphragm was inspected and was in good shape. Everything was reinstalled and road tested to be in working order. The vacuum system for the turbo and engine advance was inspected, with the broken lines replaced as needed. The vacuum system for the exhaust solenoid was capped and bypassed. The catalytic converter was plugged, but has now been removed and bypassed (will not pass CA emissions). The Auxiliary air valve (idle control valve) was replaced with a new Bosch unit from JAE in Goleta. The car drives like a completely nice and normal example with it's recorded mileage, as one would expect. There is evidence of cylinder head work (possible rebuild) and possible head gasket replacement. Gearbox, clutch, steering, suspension, brakes all feel superb and operate correctly. The car could use a good general service and regular checkup. It's probably a wise precaution to replace the timing belt with the Gates upgraded item, although the one currently fitted looks to be in pretty good order. The Dunlop tire set appears newer with good tread and the car's factory alloy wheels look decent with some curb rashing on the passenger side wheels. The underside looks excellent overall and normal for a Lotus of this age and mileage. The car includes it's clean Carfax and the original owner's handbook documenting it's first owner and delivery Allentown, Pennsylvania.Overall, a very good driving black Lotus Turbo in generally nice original condition. It could use some minor cosmetic paintwork later, but after a service is an imminently usable car ready to provide lot of fun and excitement. Because of these car's rarity and desirability, it's a wise investment going forward. Please look at all pictures / video and call or email with any questions.
