Description for Mazda MX-5 Miata 1993

This vintage 1993 Miata is a perfect, ow mileage, ully optioned, nd collectible example of the final year of production for the NA1, eries 1.

OWNERSHIP HISTORY:

  • Original owner (18 years) – March 2003 to October 2011, olumbia MO
  • 2nd owner (1 yr, mo ) – October 2011 to March 2014, span>Post Charlotte FL
  • My ownership (2 yrs) – March 2014 to present day, ampa (Lutz FL)

Note: I am not a used car dealer. I am a meticulous enthusiast and mature collector.

CARFAX REPORT NOTES: an image of CarFax I ran before buying the car in 2014 can be seen in the photos. It isabridged for the sake of size to show only the ownership history, .e., ll subsequent, yearly renewals by the owners were cut.The report shows the car had33,397 miles in March 1993 when the car was new and unregistered by the original owner. CarFax would not correct the error. The correction had to have come from DOT.

Note: The major service done 5,000 miles ago (see photos for image of the invoice) bySimpson Imports does not appear in the CarFax report because, ccording to CarFax the shop is not a subscriber.

OPTIONS:

The car was ordered with all of the available options:

  • A package – included power steering, lloy wheels, eather wrapped steering wheel, nd a factory AM/FM cassette. Mazda MSS system with CD player was optional (included in this car).
  • B package - The B package added power windows, ower antenna, ruise control, nd headrest speakers. A/C was an option (included in this car).
  • C package - In 1993 this package included tan leather interior, tan top, nd power mirrors. Note: Brilliant black exterior, an leather interior, an boot, an top was a special modeldesignation.

OTHER OPTIONS AND ACCESSORIES:

o Removable OEM Hardtop - available separately, ot included (the earliest NA1 hardtops were all painted red). This is a shiny 1990 original with perfect gaskets. To fit it to the car, ordered and installed new tan interior panels and the correct striker plates to secure the sides of the hardtop (the front latches to the existing convertible top striker plates).

Note: Until I mounted it, he top was never used. I bought it from the original owner in Vero Beach FL, ho ordered it on her 1990 Miata, ut never used it. It was stored inside of her home since new. Note: This is a collector piece in and of itself a vintage Miata.

o Air conditioning (functions perfectly as does heater, resh air system and controls).

o Sound System: MSSS (Mazda Sensory Sound System) with integrated headrest speakers, ompact disc player (with anti-theft coding) – Mazda dealer installed option (instruction packet is included -see photos).

o Limited slip differential

o Boot Cover in Tan used to protect the folded top as well as for appearances.

o Full Tonneau: black and in new condition (as in British sports cars of old). It is zippered down the middle to allow for driver only use. The back attaches the same as the boot cover, he sides and front attach with stainless “push/pin” type fasteners (see photos) on leading edges of dash and on side mirror posts – all very tidy, unctional, nd classic (see photos of tonneau, azda literature and installation instructions).

o Italian air horns (replace the weak Miata horn) – original horn is included (see photos)

o Lighted rear view mirror [two separate lights are integrated into the mirror, hey function when the doors are opened and closed as “courtesy lights”, r can be activated separately by buttons on the mirror (one or both) to function as “map lights”] – original mirror is included. (see photos)

o Jackson Racing Cold Air Intake (see photos of the manufacturer’s literature) was installed professionally by the original owner. It adds a nice throaty sound upon acceleration and an increase the horsepower when timing increased to 14 deg BTDC, hich was done. This is a well-engineered, omprehensive, nd fully integrated system. The original OEM intake system: thermostat/housing, ir box, ir plenum tubing, ardware, tc. are included (in new condition) - see photos.

SERVICE HISTORY:

  • The following were do done at 60,395 miles (see photos):
        • Engine Oil and Filter
        • Timing Belt
        • Water Pump
        • Serpentine Belt
        • Performance Shock Absorbers
        • Spark Plugs & Plug Wire Set
        • Fuel Filter
        • Brake & Clutch Fluid Flush/Change
        • Radiator Flush/Coolant Change
  • Tires: the second owner replaced all 4 tires approx. 1,500 miles ago. They are basically new and certainly adequate, ut performance rubber is recommended. In my 2 years of ownership I’ve driven the car very little so have not replaced them. If I were to move the car to my home in NC I would do it.
  • The oil and filter (Mobile1 10W-40) were changed at 64,000 miles.
  • Airbag Module – during my ownership the airbag dash light would not extinguish and threw a 6 digit code indicating a faulty module. I found this to be a common issue in older Miatas (Ford modules were used). Many owners bridge the wires in the connector together to fool the light from never coming on, ut this essentially inactivates the entire airbag system. Some forum threads also wrote about removing the instrument cluster to remove the bulb.

Note: I replaced the 5 capacitors in the control/monitoring unit (see photos). The system now functions as new with the light coming on at startup and going off in a few seconds after completing its diagnostics.

Caution: sooner or latter this Ford module will implode in all of the early Miatas. This is trueeven on my low mileage and well-cared for car. If safety and correct system operationare important, lease make sure the airbag light comes on and goes off before buyinga Miata. Mazda Dealers charge an exorbitant amount to remove the dash board (I accessed it without removing the dash board and instrument cluster) toaccess the module. The module itself is expensive even if it can be found new inanyone’s inventory. Hence, nscrupulous owners render the system inoperative or live (punintended) with the warning light on all of the time.

HOW THE CAR WAS USED:

· Original owner – drove the car approx 3,000 miles per year for 18 years. He and his son made a road trip one time from Columbia MO to Washington DC. The car was used sparingly only in the summer. It was always garaged. He cared enough to order it with all of the factory options and had the dealer install the accessories. Also, xtensive preventive maintenance were done at 60k miles (see photos of documents. Being impressed with his car, communicated with him about his ownership experiences. He was kind enough to send me all of the original parts, .g., ntake, irror, orn, onneau, tc.

· Second owner – bought the car in MO and drove it to his second home in Port Charlotte FL. Drove the car very little in two years when he visited Florida for the winter. Not particularly an automobile enthusiast, ut he took good care and kept it garaged.

· Third owner - I searched for a 1st Gen 1600 cc Miata a long time, aking several flightsin and around Florida to look at cars. I had driven a pristine 1994, 800cc, ut did not like the engine nor the balance as much as the 1600. Apart from the feel of the first 3 years of production Miatas, felt that these first, ure ones wouldbecome more collectible over time. I was disappointed with the misrepresentationof many Miatas I saw. That is, ntil I found this one.

WHY THIS SERIES (NA1):

· Light and nimble

· Sweeter engine revs and sound

· Will appreciate in value much more quickly relative to the latter (94’-97’) NA2, B, r NC series cars (if in exceptional condition) since it is the first of all Miatas. This car is special, eing the last year of the first Miatas and in exceptional condition,

· Last year of production of the original Miata

Note: car review magazines include photos and comparison write-ups of thenew 2016 Miata ND series with Miata NA1 (90’-93’), nd not any of the in-between series since the latest one is the closest in spirit with the original.

· Retractable headlamps

· Real Oil Pressure Gauge – from 1994 (NA2 with 1800cc engine) the oil gauge was essentially an “idiot light”. It did not display actual pressure variation (low to high and in-between pressure).

· For this year only, he leather seats were stitched in a pattern like those found on Ferrari cars of that era.

WHY THIS PARTICULAR CAR:

o Original, nmolested Condition:

· Lustrous original paint (no touchups, o dings, o rust) - see photos.

· Best color combination: Brilliant Back with Tan leather

· No accidents (see photos, hich show the original factory serially numbered stickers on each and every panel) - see photos of every body label.

· Original top and rear window are in perfect condition - see photos.

· Beautiful interior - see photos of minor fault in driver seat bolster side from ingress/egress and minor fault on leading edge of dash where I scratched the dash paint with the windshield sun screen – both easy to touched up if one favors any restoration above originality.

· Perfect carpeting and perfect original factory carpet mats.

Note: although mats are a relatively inexpensive item to replace (approx $100) with new OEM mats, ny used car with perfect original mats is a significant indicator of how a car was used and maintained.

o Tasteful and Functional Accessories - can be easily, e replaced with the original factory parts (included) to have it in concourse condition..

· Integrated Cold Air Intake

· Rear View Mirror with interior and map lighting (controlled by opening/closing doors or by occupants)

· Air Horns

· Convertible Top Boot

· Full Tonneau Cover

Two OEM cup holders on center console with covers (maybe good on an automatic, ut not very useful when shifting gears).

· Aftermarket Cup holder on passenger side of console (easy reach for driver). It can be removed for concourse condition.

o Mileage – low and real (original speedometer/odometer)

· Original alloy wheels in perfect condition

· All systems (controls, echanicals, ir, eat, irbag, ights, tc.) function perfectly.

· Ownership - Three mature drivers took excellent care of the car.

· Maintenance – the car needs nothing done now nor in years to come:

§ Minor maintenance good for another 5k miles.

§ Major maintenance good for another 60k+ miles.

· Fully Optioned from factory so will always command the highest premium at resale.

· Investment Quality – like my special edition BMW MCoupe, intage Triumph TR4, nd Volvo 240, his first of first series (1990' to 1993’) Miata will continue (starting with the right car and with the proper care) to increase in value.

· Usage - very little as this is one of two cars I keep in my Florida home. I have four others in our home in the Blue Ridge Mountains in NC.

o Care:

· Before leaving FL, wash/wax, pply protectant to the vinyl, nd leather conditioner to the seats. I place the car on jack stands and cover it (see photos).

· When stored, he battery is disconnected and a low voltage, utomatic battery maintainer is hooked-up.

· The car is always garaged, ept out of the sun and rain (as the previous owners did). If the car is used to run errands or take a ride for pleasure, place a sunshield on the windshield. In parking lots, park well away from other cars regardless of the inconvenience of a longer walk.

· When lowering the convertible top, first unzip the rear plastic window, lace a towel below and over it to avoid scratches (see photos) and smooth the folds by hand as the top is lowered. The boot cover is easy to use, rotects the top, nd adds a streamlined, piffy look.

· The hardtop is stored clean and covered in a spare bedroom.

SUMMARY: A fully optioned car of the 1st Series with the right color combination in exceptional condition with very low mileage, hich needs nothing for years to come, nd will appreciate in value.

===========================================================

NOTE: although the OEM Hard Top is mentioned above and seen in some of the photos, t is not included. It is listed separately as a “buy it now” item (see “other items by this seller” in the upper right portion of this page).

I listed it separately at a “healthy” price of $1,800 because:

oIt is special and collectible (first year of production and in beautiful original condition with only one small scratch on the inside) – see photos.

o I'd like the buyer to have the car totally complete, o will sell it to that person for $1,500 (I will lower the “buy it now” price accordingly). That is, ssuming that it remains unsold during the auction of the car. It is unlikely it will sell quickly given the short auction period of the car and that the right, ppreciative buyer will see and recognize it as an appreciating asset for early Miatas.

Note: the work and expense to properly mount the hard top has already been done: two new interior panels (some people cut the existing panels to mount the striker plates (it is a guess at best, here exactly to cut the panels in the right places to reveal the captive nuts for the bolts of the side striker plates as they are hidden underneath the panels at the factory), nd two middle striker plates/bolts for the side latches already on the hard top. Caution: some people rely on only the rear "Frankenstein bolts" and front latches to hold the hard top in place - not good at speed. See photos of the striker plates in the hard top photo category below. When the top is off, here is no aesthetic downside as they are behind/right of seats and have a purposeful, ntegrated look (if done right). Resale value increases with or without the hardtop since all is in place to mount one properly.

o I apologize if showing the hard top in some photos and mentioning it in the dialogue causes any confusion or disappointment (I shot those photos when I took the car out of storage last December), ut want to make known to prospective buyer of the car that hard top is available to complement car.

It is listed separately to keep the cost of the car reasonable for anyone not interested in the advantages or investment value of the hard top.

Answer:

I received notice from eBay just now that someone bought the hard top. I won't consider the PayPal transaction finalized until that person picks it up this Saturday.
Thank you,

Question:

Dear Seller, m watching your Miata auction and just sent you a message via EBay. When I looked at your other auctions to find the hardtop you talk about in your Miata listing, nly these tires come up. Did someone buy the hardtop already? Thanks in advance.

Answer:

I'm selling the car because it is one of two in my garage in FL (also a motorcycle here). I have four other cars in NC (also two motorcycles there) where, s of a couple of years ago we live most of the time, have too many vehicles, love this Miata, ut have resigned myself to part with it. Not easy to do every time I look at it, ut it makes sense now that I am retired.
The 93' Miata is pristine with only those faults I described accurately and documented with high resolution photos. If you need any other photos or information, lease let me know.
If the auction does not meet the reserve amount, may offer it at auction next spring. We are returning to the mountains in a couple of weeks and am no particular hurry to sell right away.
Regards,

Question:

Hi, 'm very interested in your Miata. Been looking for a NA that has been taken care of. I too am a meticulous car person (just washed my three today after taking off the snows). You've taken great care of it, f you don't mind me asking why are you selling it? I'm interested in both the car and hard top. Will be shipping to CT but would like my friend who lives just outside of Tampa to take a look. Contact me if you'd like to make a deal for both.

Answer:

The car is listed as an auction. The "buy it now" price is for the hard top. My reasoning is the hard top will still be available to the winner of the 7 day auction of the car.

Question:

You mention the "buy it now" price but I do not see one. What is your price to end the auction?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Answer:

Hello, y informed opinion and advice follows:
The 2002 NB2 Miatas have ugly "tombstone" seats (latter safety regulations made Mazda do it). The seat backs stick way up out of the cockpit. If you want an NB 2nd generation (1999-2004), onsider the first two years of that generation (1999 or 2000 known as NB1,i.e. the 1st iteration of the 2nd series). They had the nicer seats. LS trim is the one to get with leather seats, imited slip differential, nd other good options (helps with enjoyment and resale). These are nice cars, nd in real good condition with low miles are great to drive. Expect to pay $8,500 - $9,500 for a really nice, nrestored with original paint/seats, nmodified, tc., et an LS with very low miles and a matching hard top. These NBs will increase in value. although not as quickly as the 1st of 1st (NB1) generation.
I have a beautiful 2000 NB1 (hard top too) with 40k miles in my NC home. The downside is that they have little collector value like my 1993 NA1 does, hich is an appreciating asset. If resale or investment are of less concern, et the nicest NB you can find for lesser $ and enjoy driving it.
I prefer to let the auction run its course and communicate through eBay to keep all above board.

Question:

I’d like to know what would be the selling price of the car with the hard top. I like to skip the auction. I am driving to Las Vegas from Los Angeles to buy a 2002 Miata, ut your's looks more like my Bucket List wish. I'am 71 and living trying to enjoy everyday that comes my way. .Contact me at (xxx) xxx-xxxx. A text would be the best way to contact me. 3/14/206.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Answer:

Thank you for the complements. I am happy to know that you survived your ordeal. Your attitude and cheer inspire me.
Save the photos and take some joy in looking at this little car as I do every day. I'm sure you will find the right one when the time is right, ut get one of these earliest ones with all of the options, ot only it is more enjoyable to own, ut the value will increase as well.

Question:

Just wanted to say your car is gorgeous and I m glad there are people who took such good care of this series of Miata. I m watching your auction and do hope to bid, ut expect the final price to be out of my range at the moment (bad timing). This is the exact model and color combo I had ordered for my husband in December of 1992, ut in January of 93 I was nearly killed in a car accident……. My husband has dreamed about this car since then. It s a running family joke. I m sure he s watching your auction, oo. I d love to win it in secret and give it to him after all these years, o I m going to cross my fingers. Thanks for listing it and sharing it. Good luck to you.
