Description for Mazda Other 1971
The Mazda Cosmo is a grand touring coupé produced by Mazda Motor Corporation from 1967 to 1972. The Cosmo served as a "halo" vehicle for Mazda. nbsp;successfully launching the Mazda Wankel engine. Mazda chose to use the name Cosmo. reflecting international cultural fascination with the space race. as Mazda wanted to showcase the rotary engine as forward-thinking. with a focus on future developments and technology. The prototype of this car was introduced at the 1964 Tokyo Motor Show. and 80 pre-production Cosmos were produced for the Mazda test department and for dealership testing between 1965 and 1966. Full production began in May 1967 and lasted through 1972. and Cosmos were built by hand at a rate of only about one per day. for a total of 1. 19 (343 Series I cars and 1. 76 Series II cars). The car being auctioned here is a Series II. or L10B. and this model was introduced in July 1968. It had a more-powerful 128 hp /103 lb·ft 0813 engine. power brakes. 15 inch wheels and a 5-speed manual transmission. The wheelbase had been expanded by 15 inches for more room and a better ride. This Cosmo model was good for over 120 mph (193 km/h) and could accelerate to cover a quarter mile (400 m) in 15. 8 seconds. Only 1. 76 were ever made. and fewer than six Series II models were initially imported into the United States. The price was $4. 90 when new. Comedian and former talk show host Jay Leno owns a 1970 Series II Cosmo which was featured on the North American Speed Channel series My Classic Car in March. 2006. We know of only a very few others in the US. This car is in great condition. The engine has been overhauled. and the car driven only 2000km (1250 miles) since then. with very low overall mileage. It has been recently repainted. in its original color of white. Other than that. it is very original with its black vinyl and cloth interior. red carpeting. steel wheels with polished hubcaps. bullet mirrors on the fenders. etc. Although not shown in the photos. it will be sold with an original steering wheel and set of underhood stickers. These rare cars are appreciating rapidly. and they are being sold for more and more money recently at international auctions. as classic car collectors discover them and add them to their collections.
