Description for Mazda RX-7 1990
1990 Red RX-7 convertible with 110,250 miles with 5 speed manual transmission. 1.3L rotary engine, rear wheel drive, air conditioning, power steering, power windows tilt wheel, cruise control, AM/FM stereo. Electric top works and has black tunneau cover.
Purchased car at 32,209 miles from local Mazda dealer in Nov 1993(not single owner as car check report states). Owned and garaged (for all but six months) since then.
Maintenance History includes:
- Passed CA smog test 10/13/2017
- Have performed routine service intervals including oil changes at 45K, 53K, 60K, 67K, 86K, 90K, 92K, 100K, and 106K, mostly at same Mazda dealer.
- Oil change and rear brakes pads & rotors replaced at 109K
- Center and rear catalytic converters replaced at 90K
- Air conditioning recharged at 90K
- Clutch master cylinder and slave replaced 69K
Am offering car for $3400, well below average asking price of $8500 -$8700 for similar model year Mazda RX7 convertibles because of the following known mechanical issues:
- "Add Coolant" Sensor had been intermittently activating with dash light and buzzer, even though temperature gauges did not show overheating. Several weeks ago, took to local repair shop. They diagnosed faulty sensor, gave quote for part. Then could not locate part, so they bypassed sensor.
-Unresolved overheating issue and possible engine damage-After that bypass performed, car overheated after driving 20 miles and the last 5 miles in stop and go traffic. At first, overflow tank was full, later it was empty. Added 8 cups of water when it cooled. Took to another local shop, which did the following diagnostics: pressurized cooling system and found no leak, upper and lower hoses feel the same, no electric fan (so no electric fan failure), put it on an emissions analyzer and found hydrocarbons in coolant system (at first 1500 PPM and after idling at 477 PPM). They were unable to find cause of overheating, but suspect sticky thermostat. Their conclusion is there is possible damage to rotary O rings in motor.
- At 109K service, advised front pads and rotors need replaced in 2K miles.
- High beam indicator on column does not work.
- Car parked outside for 6 months spring 2016, discovered top leaks on driver's side.
- Slow leak in RF tire - tread is good, but tires are 10+ years old.
- Missing 2 hub caps
- Paint looks pretty good considering car has not been painted during ownership. Dent and scrape on right front fender, small dent and long scratch on Driver door, small paint gouges on rear trunk lid.
- Trunk opens and closes with trunk release, but will slam shut if not opened to max position.
- Crack in passenger visor mirror.
This is a fun to drive classic car that is going to need mechanical repairs with parts that are harder to come by. The ideal next owner is either a DIYer with time and mechanical aptitude or a RX-7 fan with the resources to recondition this diamond in the rough. Car sold as is.
