1984 MERCEDES BENZ 500SL Euro Model

VIN: WDB1070461A004591

Original Miles: 128,700 at Present

As you can see from the photos, have a beautiful 1984 Mercedes 500SL Euro model for sale finished in Anthracite Gray with black leather interior. This is a very elegant color combination for this classic German roadster. This car is in far better than average condition throughout having been driven only 128,700 original miles and having been meticulously maintained throughout the years. I won't go into all of the specifications and production numbers because if you're looking at this auction then you probably already know about the Euro cars in comparison with the American versions. I've placed what I believe is a fair starting bid and reserveand I'll let you decide from there what the car is really worth. There's a "Buy It Now" price if you are interested in ending the auction early.

History: I purchased my car in February of 2011 from the son of the original owner. The car was purchased and imported originally in July of 1984 by Direct Imports of Newport Beach, alifornia. It was delivered to Nogales, rizona and was owned for 27 years by one family who lived in the Arizona/Southern California area. Upon purchase I had it transported to my home near Birmingham, labama. I have extensive records of maintenance and repairs going back to 1984. The original owner was a car enthusiast and had a number of imported sports cars that were all well maintained. The car has always been garaged and covered. It's driven only for pleasure on nice days. It is completely rust free and in excellent physical and mechanical condition. It rides and drives as it should. I have put approx. 3,200 miles on the car during my ownership and will continue to add a few miles until it sells. I have the original Federalization paperwork and a clear Alabama title in hand.

Interior: When I purchased the car the seats showed average wear but were hardened with age and the cushioning worn. The door panels had become puckered along the upper edges like most of these cars that you see for sale. I felt that the cars' condition overall deserved better so the interior has been updated with the proper German leather seating over new horsehair seat cushions and the correct replacement door panels. Sun visors were sent off and repaired by Milos Services of Miami, lorida. They have had hard liners installed on the original frames with stitching around the sides. Not exactly original but way better looking and they will not "balloon"like the originals due to heat. The ashtray has never been used. The original carpet is clean and wear-free having always been protected by floor mats. It currently has excellent genuine Mercedes mats in place. The trunk is clean with the original carpet panels in place. The original radio was removed and replaced with an Alpine cassette player with a 6 disc CD player mounted in the trunk. There have been no modifications for additional speakers or amplifiers. I have the proper Becker radio that can be reinstalled in the car. The console is in very good condition with original burl wood trim. All gauges, lock and controls are working properly.

Exterior: The body is solid and rust free with no dents or damage of any kind. The paint is high gloss with only a few minor scratches or imperfections to be found and I consider it to be very good driver quality paint. There is history of the driver side front fender being replaced in October of 2001. According to the previous owner it was due to a parking lot incident with a post. The receipts show that it was replaced with an OEM fender and the front clip repainted and blended with the original paint. There is no visible evidence of the repair work. The glass is all clean with no cracks, hips or stars. All of the trim and body moldings are present and in very good condition. All of the lights are working and lenses in excellent condition. The 16"8-hole chrome wheels were 1990's upgrades and are bright and clean. I do not have the original 14"wheels except the spare, hich appears to have never been used. The car is riding on General Altimax HP tires with less than 2,000 miles of wear since replacement. The soft top is an older replacement but is still in good condition with no tears or significant wear. The plastic windows are clear. The original matching hardtop is clean inside and out with excellent paint and working rear defogger.

Mechanical: To the best of my knowledge everything is in good operating condition. The heat and AC work well. The engine starts first time, very time and runs amazingly smooth and quiet. The brakes stop well without pulling or squealing. The transmission shifts smoothly. Steering is true with no vibrations at any speed. There are no leaks or drips. With the top up there is a slight hum that can be heard from the fuel pump which I understand is common to these cars.

Flaws: I'm including photos of all of these issues so you will know exactly what these are. There is a small crack on the passenger side at the front of the dash at the defroster vent. The hard top has a small ding near the center of the top. The bright trim around the bottom of the hardtop has been modified on both sides. These trim pieces have very sharp points at each end and they have folded under and flattened. These are really not noticeable when the top is in place unless you know what you're looking for. There are a few very minor cracks in the hardwood on the console with a very small spot having cracked at the right edge of the ashtray. When the leather seat skins were replaced it was discovered that the heating elements for the seat heaters were literally sewn into each cushion. The new covers were not available with the elements installed so the seat heaters are no longer functioning. Aftermarket heaters could be installed if desired and connected to the original controls. I have saved the original seat skins and all of the associated wires and connectors in case the next owner would like to have them reinstalled. Everything was working at the time that they were removed. The passenger side vacuum door lock does not lock when the driver door is locked. The door and top seals show some wear but still work properly.

Extras: The car will come with several original and accessory items. As mentioned there is extensive historical information on the maintenance and repairs and the original owners manual which will all be included. I have the original unused First Aid kit, ool kit and the Becker radio which will also be included. The windscreen shown in one photo with its cover and the cockpit dust cover is included along with a mechanical lift and cover for the hardtop and a roll around cart. All of these extras amount to well over $1,000 in value. I also have one replacement oil filter and one air filter that will be included.

I'm sure that there are things that I've failed to mention or address so please ask any and all questions before bidding. This is a beautiful car that is also for sale locally so I reserve the right to end the auction early if a local buyer is found. I have many additional photos that I can e-mail to you if interested.

Please note that this is a 31 year old car and is not perfect. This car is sold as-is with no warranties expressed or implied. I would encourage a personal or third party inspection prior to purchase. Please have your financial arrangements made prior to bidding so that the transaction can be completed in a timely manner. I will require the winning bidder to pay a non-refundable $1,000.00 down payment through Paypal within 48 hours with the balance being paid by cash or bank transfer within 7 days of the auction end. The car will not be released for shipment until all of the funds have been received. I will be glad to help with shipping arrangements but all shipping costs will be at the buyer's expense.
