Description for Mercedes-Benz 300-Series 1987

Up for sale is a very well taken care of 1987 300D with about 220,000 miles (odometer worked until 199,700). If you are looking at this listing chances are you are aware of legendary reliability and awesome gas mileage (33 mpg average) of these cars as well as other added benefits like NO SMOG CHECK requirement in CA! This example is one of the last truly hand built Mercedes and it shows, t has not rattles or creaks and drives rock solid. When it was released it was the fastest diesel in the world.
Original California car, o no rust anywhere on the body or chassis. I am the third owner and have an original window sticker for $41,530 in 1987 as well as a binder full of maintenance and repair receipts.
The body is not 100% straight, here are some dings and dents but over all it's very good as you can see in pictures. Interior is solid. This 300D came with a rare option for 1987, eal leather seats.
No cracks on the dash, eadliner is good.
ALL interior switches and electronics work like new. Cruise control and sunroof work too!
Last two owners put approximately 9 thousand dollars worth of repairs and preventative maintenance work. Loads of receipts included.
Here is just some of the major work that was done to the car:
1) Six new glow plugs and glow relay.
2) The entire AC system including compressor was rebuilt and replaced by a modern R134 system.
3) Front and rear brakes were changed including rotors and brake pads as well as entire system flushed and refilled with new DOT4 fluid.
4) Rear differential was resealed and axels were replaced as well as transmission service done.
5) Alternator and battery replaced.
6) Power steering pump was leaking, t was replaced by a brand new pump, teering filter and fluids replaced. No leaking and steering is effortless.
7) All fluids including coolant were replaced using proper German fluids like Total and Fulch. Steering damper as well as accessory belt damper was replaced.
8) Replacement motor mounts.
9) Biodesel ready. Ran biodiesel and Diesel HPR for 2 years.
The bad parts: It doesn't shift out of first gear. Reverses and goes into drive but won't shift past first most of the time. It occasionally does it hard. Leaks about a quart of oil every three months.
Engine starts up and runs solid, t's drivable in first gear which means topping out at 25 MPH but I recommend having it towed. Presently registered PNO.

Edit to add: It does now shift through to second and third gear.
