Classic Cars is pleased to present this statuesque and rarely seen 1981 380SLC. This European classic is one of the most iconic sports cars in history, one of a selected few cars that has retained essential design and engineering philosophy while setting new standards of performance and aesthetics in the process.
The Mercedes-Benz SL is a grand touring roadster manufactured by Mercedes since 1954. The designation SL derives from the German Sportlich-Leicht, (Sport Lightweight) and was first applied to the 300 SL. The SL variant was a 2-seat convertible/roadster with standard soft top and optional hardtop and optional folding seats for the rear bench. The SLC (C107) derivative was a 2 door hardtop coupe with normal rear seats. The SLC is commonly referred to as an 'SL coupe', and this was the first time that Mercedes-Benz had based a coupe on an SL roadster platform.
Finished in a Champagne gold metallic, this coupe shows extremely well with only minor scratches on the roof and door dings visible upon close inspection. All the trim is present, complete and displays only minimal signs of age. The front and rear bumpers fit is extremely tight and finish is very good with minor scratches. The sunroof has a nice fit and finish but requires a little assistance when closing. The weather-stripping is pliable, with only a few signs of drying, tearing or shrinkage. The car has optional chrome fender extensions that compliments and completes the "sport" appearance. The original 14 inch wheels present well with only slight signs of age and use.
Inside, the rich tan leather front bucket seats and rear seats appear original with only slight wear spots on the drivers seat's outside bolster visible. The matching tan door panels, carpet and dashboard are a continuation of the timeless cabin design and are in good condition. All gauges are ergonomically placed have correct appearance and function as originally designed, air conditioning in inoperable. The originally equipped leather steering wheel is in excellent condition and functions as designed. The heater, power windows and Blaupunkt stereo function as designed.
This nicely presented Mercedes features a SOHC M116 3.8 liter 155 hp eight-cylinder engine, Bosch Jetronic injection, 4-speed automatic transmission, power assisted four-wheel disc brakes, four-wheel independent suspension and much more. The wheels are 14 inch original Mercedes rims with Champiro radial tires.
The SL "107" is easily one of the most recognizable and desirable Mercedes ever produced. What really sets this one is set apart from other SLs is its coupe configuration which was a limited production model. Ideal for an everyday driver or weekend get-a-ways, this 380 SLC is the way it's suppose to be. . .luxurious exterior with the heart of German motorsports.
