Description for Mercedes-Benz SL-Class 1967
Offered for sale is a gorgeous, one Southern California family owned, “black plate”, entirely rust-free 1967 Mercedes-Benz 230SL with just 84k original miles and finished in beautiful dark green metallic over a tan leather interior. Sold new to an attorney from Pasadena, CA, the car was his daily driver up until the early 1970s, from which point it was used exclusively for weekend cruises and special occasions. He would keep the car until his death in 1994, when it was passed on to his son, who also kept the car in Pasadena and, like his father, drove the car sparingly and always kept it garaged and well maintained.
The car was repainted many years ago and the dark green finish remains in excellent condition: deep, lustrous, consistent and marred only by the most negligible of imperfections, none of which are significant enough to appear in any of the pictures. The chrome is in great original condition, as are the glass and rubber, and the color matched hub-capped wheels with beauty rings are wrapped in brand new white wall tires. The undercarriage is completely original and rust-free, as one would expect of a one-family owned, well-cared-for and garaged Southern California example.
The car’s interior was reupholstered when the car was refinished and it’s in practically new condition, the tan leather seats and interior panels showing only limited wear and the dash housing nice wood trim and an updated Alpine sound system (the original Becker unit is included in the sale). The car comes with both tops: the color matched hardtop and complimentary brown German canvas soft top, both of which are in excellent condition (including the hard top’s headliner and the soft top’s clear rear window), and it also retains its original owner’s manual, original books, heavily stamped original service booklet (through 78k miles), original owner’s stamped metal warranty card (also known as a Protecto Plate), partial original tool kit and its original Kuhlmeister air conditioning unit.
The car is a joy mechanically, the 2.3L engine firing up easily, idling consistently and pulling strongly and smoothly through each of the sought-after 4-speed transmission’s gears. The ride quality is superb, the suspension and brakes behave as they should, and the car illustrates that the W113 is perhaps the first classic Mercedes that has the requisite power and ease of operation to qualify as a daily driver while still retaining that visceral vintage appeal.
This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a striking, solid and abundantly drivable classic that checks all the boxes for an excellent weekend driver: one-family owned Southern California provenance, desirable manual gearbox, strong mechanicals, rust-free original undercarriage and gorgeous cosmetic condition. If you’re in the market for a clean W113, this lovely example deserves your serious consideration – we’re sure the same pride of ownership its previous owners had for the car will extend to its next owners for many years (or decades) to come.
