What’s amazing about this automobile is that it is a European spec USA car which has been imported and federalized to drive in the USA. With 40% more horsepower than the US model, WOW……… extremely fun and fast.
This particular car in 1977 was one of the most expensive European cars ever delivered at a price tag of over $53,000 base price.
The 6.9 is the high-performance top-of-the-line version of the W116 model as class luxury saloon. It was built by Daimler-Benz in Stuttgart Germany and based on the long wheelbase version of the W116 chassis introduced in 1972. Its age the largest engine of any non-American production car post WWII.
The 6.9 was first shown to the motoring press at the Geneva auto show 1974 and was produced between 1975 and 1981 in extremely limited numbers.
It was built as a flagship of the Mercedes-Benz car line and the successor to the Mercedes-Benz original high performance than the 300 SEL 6.3.
The six point I’ve also had the distinction of being along the first vehicle ever produced with optional electronically controlled at their like brakes first produced by Mercedes-Benz and Bosch in 1978.
Continue the 6.9 self leveling hydro pneumatic suspension as an extra cost option.
The suspension system gave the 4200 pound car the benefits of both a smooth ride and handling that allowed it in the words of automobile journalists David E Davis to be tossed around like a mini, the car also featured a model W3B0503 speed automatic transmission, unique to the 6.9 and a standard CF limited slip differential both for the enhanced road handling performance on drive payment enhanced traction in inclement weather.
Four-wheel disc brakes and four-wheel independent suspension were standard across the W116 model range.
The engine was a cast iron V-8 with single overhead camshaft operating sodium filled valves against hard and valve seats on each aluminum alloy cylinder head.
Each handbuilt unit was bench tested for 265 min., 40 of which were under full load. Bosch K electro mechanical fuel injection with standard at this time when fuel injection cars run, and. Is all Mercedes-Benz automobile engines the crankshaft connecting rods and pistons were forged.
Instead of cast. The 6.9 6834cc or 417 inch was power plant from the factory rated at 286 hp. And the European models added 40 more horsepower on top of that, which this car has.
The race track performance of the automobile top speed was rated from the factory at 140 MPH along the journalist that tested and revealed the car was brought you eights EH approached by the factory to write a promotional literature about the 6.9.
He agreed under the condition that he could list the cars faults as well as positives Daimler-Benz agreed and it in turn and EH was given a US specs 6.9 to drive from Manhattan to the road roads of Atlantic Grand Prix racecar in Georgia, it’s race speeds for a full 40 laps of over hundred miles an hour.
The only change made to the car. Upon his arrival at the road lander wasn’t necessary adjustments of tire pressure driving 40 laps was a difficult task even for purpose built racecar driver, let alone illegal street design did geared for higher speed autobahn cruising the 6.9, suffered no mechanical problems and averaged a very respectable 72 mph throughout the test, completing with little more than excessive dust on the bodywork from the Mitchell and tires from then it was reported to have driven the car back till went to the sunroof open and the radio on at high-performance speeds, the car made them think better of such a risky driving any finished the test with the radio often both hands on the wheel. And gave it an A+ rating.
This is one of the fastest, four-door sedans ever built in history at top speed of over 140 miles an hour. Think about that in 1977.
