Description for Mercedes-Benz 400-Series 1974
West Coast Classics are proud to present an absolutely exceptional and simply stunning example of this original southern California with its original 'California blue license plates' 1974 Mercedes-Benz 450SEL Long Wheel Base (W116-033 Series) 4.5L 180HP V8 Sedan (built only between the years 1973-80), and obviously always coveted and always garaged and covered with no signs of any accidents and absolutely no rust and reportedly owned until recently by a long time owner and a mostly completely s...tock example with it's original factory 'Becker Grand Prix' radio, power windows, power steering, power brakes, spare wheel and jack, original Mercedes Benz factory 'Bundt' style chromed alloy wheels and rare factory sunroof and factory air conditioning! The car is in mostly all original and stock condition with its original and highly striking 'Dark Olive' (Weiss - Code 291) factory color paint in simply fantastic condition with a factory sunroof and its gorgeous and seemingly all original 'Palomino' leather interior! The highly desirable 4.5L/180HP V8 engine runs smooth and strong and boasts only 111K original miles and this is a car fully loaded with factory options including power steering, power brakes, power windows, power antenna, 'Becker Grand Prix' radio, sunroof, air conditioning, fog lamps, vacuum central locking, and a stunning interior with matching carpet and kick panel carpet all in exceptionally fine condition throughout with rear 'Coco' mats and with no cracks in the original dashboard or wood veneer.
Mercedes-Benzs introduction of the W116 in 1972 not only signaled the replacement of the previous W108/109 series, but also marked the beginning of the top-of-the-line 'S Class' (Sonderklasse). The W116 was Friedrich Geiger's last design for Mercedes-Benz whose legendary career at Mercedes had started with the 500K in 1933. This spectacular sedan boasted muscular and imposing styling as well as a new chassis with a 112-inch wheelbase, four-wheel disc brakes, and all-around independent suspension that featured a unique twin control arm front suspension. The introduction of the 450SE and 450SEL (LWB) model with the now legendary M117 V8 engine with 4,520cc in early 1973 was a sensation with the 450SE model being named the 'European Car of the Year' in 1974 and with the 450SEL being introduced with a 100mm (4 inches) longer wheel base.
This particular highly desirable Long Wheel Base example from 1974 must have spent almost all of its life garaged and covered as it is in truly exceptional condition throughout with all the chrome, including both front and rear bumpers and all four chrome 'Bundt' wheels in very spectacular condition and all the typical rust-prone areas solid and rust-free. The car has a razor straight body with no signs of any accidents or damage whatsoever! This car must truly be seen to be seen and driven to be fully appreciated - the engine is extremely strong and responsive with excellent oil pressure and which sounds absolutely magnificent and the transmission shifts smoothly through the gears and the engine temperature always remains cool. All the power options are working including the factory sunroof.
These 450SEL Long Wheel Base cars were built to be the ultimate long distance touring car with fully independent suspension that will hold any road without wandering or being unsettled by rough terrain and with 4" of extra rear legroom and seats contoured by orthopedic surgeons to give firm support on specially tuned springs and a steering system with a special shock absorbing system! It all adds up to a completely different level of luxury and sophistication.
This is one exceptionally fine and head-turning example of a mostly completely original and quite rare 1974 Mercedes 450SEL Long Wheel Base Sedan (which is 4" longer than a regular 450SE, and as stated in the brochure 'Mercedes engineers invested in the rear compartment legroom only and not squandered in useless overhang!') in rare turn-key ready daily appreciating, daily driving and daily head-turning condition! Perfect for the Mercedes collector or enthusiast or any classic car lover looking for an affordable and reliable daily driving classic European car!
