Description for Mercedes-Benz 200-Series 1968
1968 MERCEDES-BENZ 200D Four-Door Fintail Sedan
- Spent 1.5 years building this car up.
- Cruises at 80 mph on the highway.
- Gets a consistent 26-29 MPG.
- It is in fantastic condition, extremely reliable, fun to drive and receives a steady flow of compliments.
- Just about everything that needed attention has been replaced or refreshed, starting with the addition of a professionally-rebuilt 240D diesel engine (OM616.912) from a 1982 Mercedes that delivers superior power since it is three generations newer than the factory engine.
- Painted Horizon Blue (Mercedes color#304) in October 2015.
- Body is straight with no dents.
- Original red interior is near flawless and complete which is extremely rare for Fintail models.
- Floor-shift, four-speed manual transmission is very fun to drive with a clutch pedal that is light and a very low first gear that's ideal in heavy traffic conditions.
- Stable and rides like new because every rubber bushing in the front and rear end has been replaced.
- New Hancook Optimo tires 205-75-14 7/31/2017 at 129618 miles
- Complete new brake system master cylinder, flex hoses, front calipers and pads and rear wheel cylinders and shoes. Everything was replaced except the hard lines and the rotors which were fine.
- New clutch disc, bearing and master and slave cylinders.
- The car is plumbed and ready for an auxiliary fuel tank in the trunk (see pictures).
- Has rear air shocks with a fill valve in the trunk. Great if you add the auxiliary fuel tank or carry something heavy.Air can be added or removed through a standard Schrader (bicycle-type) air valve to change the ride height in the rear.
- New front shocks, tie rod ends, center link, steering stabilizer.
- Windshield trim and dash speaker grill, glove box, c-pillar air vents all in excellent condition, dash clock works, all gauges within the instrument cluster work.
- Has the factory Blaupunkt radio which was disconnected in favor of an after-market stereo installed beneath the driver's seat.
- Includes original jack, a good condition full-size spare tire and all factory service manuals on CD (PDF).
HISTORY
- I am the third owner.
- When I bought the car, I confirmed the odometer works and it read 22,812 miles.
- I bought this car to build for me and selected it because it was complete, had practically no rust and an interior that was in excellent condition and complete. Many items needed to be replaced or refreshed which has been done.
- Based on the overall condition, and conversations with the previous owner, the actual mileage when I purchased it was 122,812.
- The second owner was from Yakima, Washington who garaged the car most of its life. The first owner was from California where the car was originally delivered and sold.
- I put 8,400 miles on the car and the new engine. I managed the engine rebuild and installed it personally.
- The original build sheet from Stuttgart, Germany was obtained from the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center.
- All records of previous owners will be provided to the buyer along with a file of receipts documenting a substantial amount of work I have done.
- This car features a W110 chassis and is more commonly known as a "fintail" model. The German name is Heckflosse which means "little fin." Some refer to the model as a Ponton. The 200D model was produced from 1966 to 1968 with approximately 161,618 built.
- The 200D model is beautifully simple. A benefit of the updated engine is, parts are available, cheap and easy to source.
- This was a rolling restoration and my daily driver for the past year. I recently drove it from Venice, California to Madras Oregon for the eclipse and it ran excellent.
