Description for Mercedes-Benz 300-Series 1979
When this old you are, look as good will you?
This is for a 1979 Mercedes 300D (chassis W123.130). In 2005, the previous owner swapped out the regular diesel engine with a turbo engine from a 1984 turbo 300D.
This is one of those legendaryMercedes diesel engines that keeps on going.
At the time of the swap the 1984 engine had about 127,000 on it. Currently it has 139,500 miles on it. At the same time, he also did the transmission and swapped the rear differential to a 3.07. From the receipts, I estimate that there are about 17,000 miles on the Michelin tires and they are in very good condition. The previous owner kept meticulous records. He purchased the car in 1979. I have original service receipts and owners service records back to 1979/1980 on the original car and engine, and receipts from the engine swap and a bunch of other work since 2005.
As the pictures show, the original paint is in excellent condition. This is the last year of the good paint before they started putting clear coat on car paint. It buffs up nice and shiny.
The chrome is still shiny. It has original window glass and the window seals are good.We tried to take a picture underneath which didn't come out well - but it leaks almost no oil. The original owner is in Petaluma. The car currentlylives in the East San Francisco Bay area. The car has not been exposed to any road salt to my knowledge. It is not believed that anyone has smoked in it. The A.C. was just charged and it works well. All original glass, good rubber window seals. Power windows working. I just had the brake booster replaced. New OEM carpeted floor mats for it. The sunroof works.
The previous owner had the driver's door re-keyed when the engine was swapped out. Therefore, the key to the driver's side door does not lock all the doors. You have to press them down manually. There is a separate key for the passenger side lock and trunk.
The ignition key only starts the engine. It does not open any doors.
It could use weather stripping inside the doors if you were fastidious and had time to do the work. We have lots of previous records and receipts as well as the original Mercedes Owners manuals and a shop manual for a 300D (non-turbo)
This is a great car. Does not have to go through smog in California. and does not need regular tune-ups. .
We acquired the car in 2013 thinking it would make a great veggie oil car, butpriorities have changed and I need my garage back..It's a very nice car. It drives very well and has good acceleration. It only gets drivento old car show, work and the grocery store. It is garaged when not being driven.
