Description for Mercedes-Benz SL-Class 1988
Goodman Reed Motorcars(805) 202-4557
Offered for sale is an absolutely stunning, one family owned, completely original (including paint), 43k original mile, mechanically strong, cosmetically gorgeous 1988 Mercedes-Benz 560SL finished in desirable Astral Silver over a dark blue leather interior with a matching dark blue soft top.
Originally sold by Gurley-Leep Buick Mercedes-Benz, in Mishawaka, Indiana to the owner of a printing company in nearby South Bend, IN, he would own the car until his passing in November of last year, at which point title transferred to his daughter. Always garaged and doted over, the car was used sparingly, consistently maintained over its 30 years of service, primarily at the original selling dealership. As such, the car remains in excellent condition, a well-loved and completely original example that elicits compliments on a daily basis.
Astral Silver over dark blue has to be one of – if notthe– most attractive and timeless color combination in which the R107 was ever produced. The completely original finish is marred only by exceedingly minor imperfections (detailed below, with photos available), none of which are significant to detract from the car’s considerable presence. Having never been in any accidents, the body is entirely straight, retaining all of its factory correct panel fits and gaps. The original alloy wheels are flawless, wrapped in Michelin tires with plenty of remaining tread and the original dark blue soft top is in excellent condition, with a clear rear window.
In the interest of full disclosure, we’ve documented the car’s cosmetic imperfections below and detail photos of each can either be sent upon request or can be found on our website.
- Small paint chip above the rear wheel arch on the passenger side.
- Two small scratches adjacent to the passenger side rear soft top compartment.
- A few small chips on the edge of the driver side door.
- Small scratch between the vents and the windshield on the passenger side.
- A small scratch and chip on the driver side soft top compartment cover.
- A small rock chip on the very bottom of the windshield on the passenger side.
- A very soft ding in the top of the front bumper.
- A small scratch on the rear bumper.
There are also a handful of barely discernible rock chips on the lower portion of the front valance, none of which show up in pictures.
The car’s interior is equally as clean, the dark blue leather seats showing only minimal wear consistent with the car’s age and low miles, the carpets, interior panels and wood veneer inserts in excellent original condition and the dash is free of any warping or cracking, housing fully functional gauges and the original Becker Grand Prix radio. The radio is currently working only intermittently, however we will either have it repaired or provide the next owner an equivalent credit, depending on their preference. The hardtop is in showroom condition, including the flawless headliner.
The car is as strong mechanically as any 560SL we’ve owned, the engine starting easily, idling consistently and pulling strongly and smoothly through each of the gears. The car drives and brakes straight and true and is extremely comfortable on the road, with a thoroughly modern ride quality. Whether tooling through town, winding through the canyons or bombing down the highway at Autobahn speeds, the car performs without fail. The car comes with its original window sticker, purchase order and all associated sales documents, a folder full of service receipts, all of the original books and manuals (including a stamped service booklet), three original keys, the original tool kit, a fitted car cover, a hard top stand and an entirely clean CARFAX report
This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a 560SL that checks all the right boxes: exceptionally clean, completely original, low original miles, one family owned, well documented, mechanically strong and finished in a very desirable color combination. If you’ve been looking for a gorgeous original 560SL, we’d recommend you act quickly – this one is sure find its next home in very short order.
