This vehicle was serviced at South Hampton Mercedes-Benz 11 years... ago, showing approximately 4,300 miles (picture verifying that mileage but still not guaranteed due to age). This particular example shows very little wear and tear, instruments and dash all in good working order. This rare 1970 280SL drives and performs beautifully. On the exterior the paint is in very good condition and the panel fit is good all around, chrome shows light pitting. This car has been taken care of very well and can continue to provide many pleasures to its owner. In 1963 Mercedes introduced the W113 chassis on which an all-new SL was built. The new SL line was a complete departure from the 190SL (W121) and a different car compared to the 300SL (W198). The body was designed by Paul Braq and was offered with both a soft top and, as an option, a removable hard top of which both are included. The design of the hardtop incorporates a concave roof shape and when viewed from the front resembles a Japanese Pagoda. Thus Pagoda became the adopted name for the series of three generations â€" 230SL, 250SL and 280 SL. Production on the W113 ended in the spring of 1971, eight years after its introduction, with the new R107 chassis. Production of the 280SL started in 1967. A total of 23,885 cars were produced during 1967-1971 and 12,927 were destined for the US. In 1968 the 280SL got an engine upgrade to a bored/stroked 2.8 liter version of the Bosh-injected inline six.The market continues to rise on the Pagoda, especially one in as good condition as this one. No collector would want to be without this fine wonderfully driving classic with quite a unique history!.
