Description for Mercedes-Benz S-Class 1969
1969 Mercedes 280S Classic - 4 Door Sedan - Imported From Germany
This1969 Mercedes-Benz 280S is a partially restored classic, powered by a 2.8L M130 inline-six and column-shift manual transmission.
She is being sold by the 2nd owner of the car who purchased the car in Bremen, Germany. The car was shipped to Canada in 1980 to add to his collection at that time and this year was imported to the United States by his daughter.
Since the 1980's the car has only been driven on some weekends and has slept most of its life in a storage garage waiting to be taken out.
She has the original paint and cool black leather interior with all parts still original. The car is a very clean, nice car for its 50 year age !
Exterior : The red / burgundy paintwork is thought to be original and shows a nice shine for its age.
Wheel Rims:The wheel rims are "Bundt" style. This forged light alloy aluminum was debuted as a Mercedes-Benz option in the summer of 1969 for stronger high speed performance to improve on the old style hub caps. These same rims were also used manufactured for the Porsche 911 that proved its performance.
The 14 inch tires on this car are also in good condition for car safety.
The Motor : Underhood sits a 2.8L M130 inline-six engine that is in restored condition and has been professionally cleaned. The car today runs and drives well. This car will drive like a new vehicle of its era should and could easily be used for long tours.
This year the owner did annual maintenance and replaced the following mechanical components to restore the car to good running and show condition. This cost spent was $2,000 U.S and included: Oil Filter/Oil Change, Brake Fluid; New Fuel Hose/Lines & Fittings; Brake Cylinder, Calipers, Lines, Hoses & Pads; Ignition Coil Restored; New Battery; New Fuel Injection Pump; New Spark Plugs, Spark Plug Wires and Rotor; and New Front Subframe Bushings.
A plug in for winter starting has been added that may not be original to the car.
Interior : Inside, the original black leather seats present well with no rips or tears and the inside carpeting is also clean and almost like new as it has been well covered throughout the years while in storage.
The interior roof is in very colored mb tex where 1 area at the back passenger side is sagging and needs tightening.
There are no cracks or rips seen on the dash or on the surrounding interior seats, door panels or interior roof.
The large-diameter ivory steering wheel in this car was an extra that was added as a premium option by Mercedes in 1969.
The five-digit odometer shows 23,300 kilometers. By the 1978 service records made in Germany before the car was imported it appears that the odometer has turned over and that the car has been driven 123,000 kilometers which is approx. 75,000 U.S. miles.
The Veneered wood trim on the dash board and doors retains its gloss and the car has its original stereo radio and all of the interior is original without any missing pieces.
Windshield: The front windshield has a visible rock chip in the center that is starting to split outward. This does not impact visiblity but should eventually be replaced. We have located a replacement windshield for $225 that could be shipped to the new owner .
Service Records / Manuals: The Original service booklet displays stamped maintenance in Germany and Canada and comes with the sale in addition to variousowners manuals.
Overall Condition: Heavy undercoating is visible and seems to have protected the undercarriage although there isvisible rust under the car that needs to be cleaned and then coated with rust stop used in restorations.
The new subframe bushings were added this year at the underside front of the car at cost of $600. because of rust starting. The car was rust coated in the 1990's and again in 2000 that has protected the car.
There is also 1 corner at the back passenger side wheel we'll that requires body work replacement of metal that is aprox. 2 inches X 1 inch. This is a small repair that has not been done in order to show any purchaser the current condition of the car.
Trunk Interior and Original Equipment: The original factory jack and spare tire wrench are present in the trunk, with a good spare tire. In the trunk, the lining has been replaced with a new lining as the old one was cracking.
The interior of the trunk does not have any visible rust, holes and is very clean and ready to show off.
The car looks very nice and drives well and needs an owner that will continue to enjoy her !
Current Appraisal / Valuation: Our local Mercedes Dealer has used the well known Hagerty Insurance Company to value the current condition to be "Good to Fairâ€. We are advised that the car could easily be "Excellent" by their ranking with some added restoration to win shows by waxing the exterior, replacing the front windshield, re-chroming front bumper, and repairing rust at 1 area and re-coating underbody with rust stop.
By their rating the estimated value of the car today in its present condition is $12,000-$14,000. U.S.
We are asking below that for a quick sale.
In excellent condition, this classic increases to $19,000 and $23,500 in "Concours" condition if groomed under the body with minor repairs such as the new windshield glass, repair of the 1 wheel well rusting area, and some of the door vinyls could be replaced to be like new although not necessary.
