Description for Mercedes-Benz S-Class 1972
1972 Mercedes-Benz 280SEL 4. 5 W108. 068 1972 Mercedes-Benz 280SEL 4. 5 Rust free and no accidents! A classic that is suitable as a daily driver! Everything original except paint! Well maintained since day one! Click to enlarge any of the photos below. A link to a slideshow of all the enlarged photos is available at the bottom of the page. This Mercedes-Benz 280SEL 4. 5 is in amazing condition. mechanically and aesthetically. The exterior was repainted original factory tobacco brown (color code 423). Overall it presents quite beautifully. The body is very straight. and there's a nice shine to the paint job. despite the tiny white spots which are. for the most part. only visible up close on the surface of roof and trunk. The Cognac seats and door panels are all original and in nearly perfect condition. Seat belts all function correctly. Carpet is in great shape. Dashboard pad has no cracks. The top dash wood has been professionally redone! This is the part of the car that almost always shows a car's age due to unavoidable sun damage. Radio is original but doesn't work. All four power windows work. as do the 4 heater levers. There are a few chips and nips throughout the body as you can see in the pictures. but the fact that these blemishes are the only imperfections on the body of a 43 year old car really demonstrates the high quality of care it's been handled with. Of all the 280SEL units manufactured world-wide. Mercedes-Benz only built approximately 8. 00 of them with the 4. 5 litre M117 V8 engine. When you account for the thousands that have been damaged by rust or destroyed in accidents over the course of the past 40+ years. you're talking about a relatively low production classic with few like it still on the road. This 280SEL is equipped with four like-new Michelin tires. The windshield is the original from Germany. as you can see its distinct blue sticker on the lower right side. The trunk floor is exceptional with no rust at all. Tool kit is also original! The front door wood pieces are not in the best condition (especially the upper piece on the driver's door). but the rear door wood is in nice condition. Please also note that the power steering gear box does leak. and should be resealed to avoid any stains on the floor. The exhaust system appears to have been recently replaced because it sounds perfect. If I had to find something to complain about after driving this car. it would be the door seals. which. due to their age. are not sealing well against the body. The passengers will hear some wind noise while driving at higher speeds. A valve job was performed not too long ago. and it's a pretty easy observation to make once you take the car for a spin. It has plenty of power and no smoking whatsoever. With only 90-something thousand miles. this engine is barely breaking in! The transmission was recently serviced. and it shows. Shifting is nice and smooth. like all 4. 5 sedans were designed to shift! The engine distributor also appears to have been changed at some point. and that's not a particularly cheap part to replace. but it's a necessity for these cars from the 1970s in order to keep the engine running well and eliminate a great amount of maintenance down the line. Speaking of maintenance; the valve job alone would exceed $4. 00 today. That being said. this is a fantastic Mercedes-Benz 280SEL 4. 5 that's ready to go. and only in need of a driver who will continue taking good care of it while enjoying its luxury and performance!
