1969 MERCURY COUGAR ELIMINATOR
PROJECT

Eliminators, ike Mustang Boss 302's are very hard to find, nd this one will be worth a lot more when fully restored. Don't miss this opportunity to own a very unique Muscle Car.

Mercury raised its muscle car profile with the introduction of the 1969 Mercury Cougar Eliminator. Taking its cue from Ford's own Boss 302 and Mach 1 Mustangs, br> Ford introduced the Eliminator in April 1969. This Eliminator was produced shortly thereafter on June 3rd, f 1969, hree days ahead of schedule.

ENGINE

To give the Eliminators more punch right out of the gate, he standard powerplant during the 1969 model year was FoMoCo's 351-cu.in. Windsor V-8. Featuring a bore and stroke of 4.00 x 3.50 inches, four-barrel carburetor and 10.70:1 compression, t was officially rated at 290hp and 385-lbs.ft. of torque (exceeding a standard Cougar's two-barrel 250hp version); code M appears as the fifth digit in the VIN. This Eliminator has the 351 Windsor under its hood to give it plenty of power for others to envy. As you can see from the video, he engine runs and the car runs and drives, ut we would recommend a nice rebuild to achieve the performance and dependability that every wants.

TRANSMISSION

Coupled to the 351-cu.in. V-8 is a standard floor-shifted three-speed manual. The transmission shifts nicely, ut like the engine, e would recommend that you rebuild it. Rebuild kits are available for under $300.

DIFFERENTIAL

There's little need to worry when it comes to the differential suspended under each Eliminator, s Mercury utilized the famed and ever-durable Ford 9-inch unit. Listed under the "Performance Axle" heading, he standard final-drive ratio was 3.25:1. This Eliminator has the standard 3.25:1 ratio.

CHASSIS

Eliminators were constructed via the unit-body method, uch like corporate cousin Mustang, xcept that Cougar featured a longer 111-inch wheelbase. Ford's standard independent front suspension for this platform--consisting of upper and lower control arms, oil springs, ubular hydraulic shock absorbers and an anti-roll bar--graced each Eliminator, s did a semi-elliptic leaf spring system at the opposite end. Also mandated was the "performance handling package" consisting of heavier springs, larger anti-roll bar and performance tires (more on the latter in a moment).

This Eliminator was optioned with power steering as an added plus.

Even with this somewhat conventional performance setup, here is one subtle difference you should be aware of: All Eliminators motivated by the Boss 302 automatically received staggered rear shock mounting (one ahead of the axle, he other behind) to thwart wheel hop under hard acceleration.

WHEELS & TIRES
Standard Eliminator wheels on 1969 models were 14 x 6-inch styled steel featuring 12 slots. Finished in argent, ith plain 5-inch hubcaps and trim rings, hey could have been swapped out for a set of 14 x 6-inch five-spoke styled wheels. Similar to those available in previous years, hese arrived from the factory with a black rim, charcoal center and chrome inserts; a small, lue center cap with a chrome "walking cat" finished the look.
For 1969, set of F70-14 Traction Belted tires enveloped the owner's wheel selection, hough these could also have been swapped out for a set of F70-14 white sidewall bias-plies. Reproduction bias ply tires and a multitude of radials are readily available from multiple suppliers.
Today, t's common to see non-stock wheels and tires, ften favoring period choices like Shelby "Mag-Star"-style aluminum five-spokes, Magnum 500s and Torq Thrusts. Larger 14 x 7 and 15 x 7-inch "stock style" wheels are also available from several suppliers, ut if you're looking to revert to factory-correct standards for your Eliminator, eproduction 12-slot wheels are available for $185 from Mustangs Unlimited.

BODY & INTERIOR
Mercury built each Eliminator from the base Cougar hardtop coupe. It was offered in only four colors: Competition Orange (code 3 on the data plate), right Blue (code 6), ellow (code 9) and White (code M). This Eliminator is a code M white Eliminator.
Helping the Eliminator stand out was the automatic upgrade to a blacked-out grille, ody-color hood scoop, eft-hand body-color racing mirror, ocker panel molding and the elimination of the wheel-opening moldings. A full-width adjustable spoiler was bolted to the trunk lid, lso painted in body color but devoid of graphics.
A pair of side stripes--in black or white only--ran from the front fenders to just past the leading edges of the quarter panels, apped by Eliminator block letters; these replaced pinstripes. A final exterior touch was the inclusion of a front fiberglass spoiler, finished in matte black, ttached at the dealership upon delivery.
As for the interior, liminator-only Hi-back bucket seats finished in Comfort-Weave vinyl came standard in only three colors: black (5A), hite (EA) and blue (5B). This Eliminator’s seats were blue. Custom door trim--part of the interior décor group--rear armrests and a Rim-Blow steering wheel were also standard Eliminator equipment. Tucked into the black crackle-finished dash was a full complement of instruments, ncluding an elapsed-time clock and a 6,000-RPM tachometer. Also, ll Eliminators received a special block-off plate over the center warning indicator panel.
This Eliminator has a very decent body with only a bit of bondo in the lower quarters and lower corners of the doors. Currently the car is in white primer and deserves a full restoration.

As you can see from the pictures, he front grill is missing the center section. If you don't think you can find that piece, all us, e should be able to help you locate the missing piece.

RESTORATION & PERFORMANCE PARTS
The Cougar lineup shares many components with the Mustang, aking the Eliminator relatively easy to restore.
Due in large part to the Eliminator's muscle car status, he aftermarket continuously adds to its catalogs for those looking to enhance performance and handling. As an example, lobal West, otal Control and others offer extensive suspension upgrades.

BRAKE SYSTEM:
The mustang has front and rear drum brakes. They are intact and complete. If you would rather have front disk brakes, e can add those for $1,000.

GLASS:
The Eliminator's windshield is cracked and will need to be replaced. Otherwise the car will come with all its glass but there may be nicks or scratches which can be fixed or replaced.
