Description for Mercury Capri 1993
1993 Mercury Capri convertible in excellent condition. Runs & drives perfectly, recent alternator replacement. Always garage kept by meticulous retired Chrysler/Ford engineer Peter Dawson, who designed, built, and raced his ownG-modified cars for 17 years, until 1971. I'm assisting his widow to sell the car as it isseldom used now.Flaws: There is a ding in the LH front fender I've shown in one photo, a long scratch on the trunklid which might buff out, or can be touched up with original touchup paint supplied with the car, along with spare convertible top in very useable condition as the owner preferred black over the original white. As I recall, there is another paint scratch at the left front of the fender. Original spare never used, original jack. Clean inside & out.
Peter was a long term friend and mentor. As an Automotive Engineer for Chrysler and Ford, his career alsoincluded working for Coventry Climax and Colin Chapman in England in the 50's studying the most advanced ideas in engines and engineering.Hepicked up Chapman's focuson lightness in his carswhen he designed, built and raced his ownG modified cars called "Ferrets" and "PMD". He started with Crosley engines, then Merc outboards, then V8s with very light tubular chassis using his own suspension geometry. How he love the Hemi engines. He was instrumental with Chrysler in starting MOPAR parts. His racing buddies were always bugging him about how they could get hop-up parts for their Mopars. Peter was Chrysler's Technical Liaison with the Sommers Brothers on their Land Speed Record car, Goldenrod, now restored, with Peter's help, and exhibited in the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn Mi. Their record of 409 mph held for many years, and Peter is recognized in the audio presentation on the car at the museum. I have a copy of original B&W film on a DVD documenting the history of the record run at Bonneville in the mid '60s, and if I can make a good copy of it, it will go with the Capri. In the film, Burt Munro's old Chevy panel van cuts between the camera and the LSR car being push-started by a Ford wagon. Peter told me he often bought dinner for Burt at Bonneville since Burt (World's Fastest Indian movie) was always broke!
After retiring from Ford, Peter designed & marketed his own Car Skates, to help car owners move their cars around in restricted spaces. His idea was rapidly copied by others, but he was the originator. I still use 4 sets of his skates for my cars.
The car is sold as-is, where-is, and being a used car has no warranty. It is in Birmingham, Mich. I would not hesitate to fly in and drive it home, but there is no guarantee that would work for the winner of the auction. Feel free to ask questions thru Ebay before the end of the auction, and I will answer them as best I can, but I am not now in town to assist in showing the car.Peter loved working on his extensive ownership of unusual cars, mopeds, and motorbikes. Among them were a Citroen 2CV, a very rare Victoria micro car, a Tuk-Tuk from Thailand, plus a Trabant jeep.
I believe this is the best looked-after Capri available. Bid to own, no swaps, no asking about reserve . Buyer to pick up at his/her expense. Deposit of $200 to be paid by Paypal within 48 hrs of auction close, and full payment in cash or cashier's check due 7 days after auction end.

CORRECTION: I erred in the transmission description - the car is a 5 speed manual, NOT an automatic. It also has working AC, heater, radio/cassette player, and working power windows.

A photo of the underside of the front end shows some yellow spots, which aren't rust, but factory paint marks on critical bolts indicating that they've been checked and ok'd. There is one maybe 1.5 in. long rust mark on a low area of the left front chassis bottom where I think the undercoating was scraped by something and it shows a small amount of surface rust. Note the fact that the door bottoms are near perfect, and the only other appearance of any rust is some surface oxidation on the tierods of the independent rear suspension links, which don't have any rustproofing on them, and that is very minor oxidation for a 23 yr old car that has always been garaged and never driven in winter. I have done all my own rust repair & mig welding restoration on my 50 yr old Citroens, with thin metal unibodies that rust badly, so I know rust better than most car guys, having been at this for 53 yrs. I believe this Capri is in better condition than any other one of this vintage. The mileage is original, as Peter always had two co. cars for their daily driving. The Capri was their summer sunshine car, and the Dawsons were the only drivers, having no children. It's in outstanding shape.
