Description for Mercury HOT ROD 1951

1951 Mercury Coupe with amazing history that was undriven from 1971-2012. This car had the same owner from 1953 until 2012 when the Mercury was sold out of his estate in Indiana. Carl Thomas Drag raced this mercury from 1953 to 1970 in the midwest, primarily Indiana and Ohio. Originally it was raced with Flathead power but under the hood resides its last powerplant, installed in the late 60's, a 307 cu in small block chevrolet with Rochestor mechanical fuel injection and ignition from a 1960 Corvette. There is a custom adapter and scattershield to mate the engine to the stock Mercury bellhousing. Engine is backed by a T-10 4 speed transmission and Hurst shifter. Rear end is an early Chevrolet Posi Traction Differential with a 3.73 gear. This car really runs out well and has great power, still pulling at 6500RPM! The engine was built for RPM, not torque. This car still wears its tires from 1970 on Astro chrome wheels. Rears are Mickey Thompson redline cheater slicks. Lacquer paint and interior were refinished in the late 60's. It was a VERY nice job for the time and both still look great. The paint is a mile deep with only a little scratch and a spot where the paint has buffed through on the drivers front fender. (pictured) Its amazing that it has not cracked over the years, but im sure having been carefully stored indoors helped alot. The chrome is very nice throughout with only minimal flaws from age. Interior is custom "Diner Style" Copper and White glitter material on the seats, the front buckets are from a 65 chevelle. Solid car with all original floors and rockers. Inner rockers had some sheetmetal repairs at some point and it appears to have been done very well. This car won tons of trophies and awards in the 60', including an NHRA Division 3 class winner award. It was also the Ohio-Indiana Champion. Comes with the jacket awarded to Carl and his old helmet with assorted trophies. This was a street/ strip car as many where back then. It was street driven to races and also was showed in Car shows. A few years back the injection was rebuilt by a specialist and the brakes and clutch were replaced so it could be street driven again. Its only had about 50 miles put on her since. The left taipipe puts out a little smoke and the engine drips a little oil, but otherwise nothing out of the ordinary.
