Description for Mercury Comet 1965
You see cars like this 1965 Mercury Comet Cyclone in magazines with dramatic photos and breathless prose, but you don't ever think you can own such a car. After all, it costs six figures to have the pros build something like that and the guys who own them never want to give them up.
Well, guess again, because this Cyclone is available for a fraction of its build cost and is so fresh, you can be the first one to win a trophy with it. Looking for your way into the magazines? Look no further than this sinister silver bullet. Paint and bodywork are stunning, with laser-straight bodywork that retains all the ornate sculpting along the flanks as well as the stacked headlights that make it look grown up. Gorgeous PPG Cortez Silver paint is a mile deep and gives this vintage Merc a high-tech look that's right at home with today's muscle. Most of the factory trim made the transition intact as well, particularly the unique grille up front, the bumpers with built-in parking lights, and those cool fluted taillights that seem to blend right into the tail panel. Even the neat little Cyclone emblems on the quarters are still there. Obviously there were cubic dollars spent here and this car stops traffic wherever it goes, subtle or not.
OK, so the screaming red interior isn't so subtle, but it is beautifully crafted. Showing exactly zero signs of use since it was completed, the bright red buckets have a suitably '60s vibe and the simple surroundings emphasize the Comet's no-nonsense attitude. A slender wood-rimmed wheel looks traditional, but it hangs on a polished tilt column and frames a set of big, clear Autocross gauges from Classic Instruments. Secondary controls are original, with a modern AM/FM/CD stereo taking the original AM radio's place in the center of the dash. That shifter manages a 5-speed manual and snaps through the gears with real authority and a full-sized back seat makes this a car that you can still use regularly. A modern A/C system was installed and tucked out of sight, using discreet vents in the dash that almost look like they've been there since day one. There's also a good-sized trunk that's fully reupholstered in matching red vinyl and carpet, the hallmark of a high-cost rod.
You'll love the powerplant, a late-model Ford 4.6 liter DOHC V8 from a Mustang Cobra. It's topped by a 4-barrel carburetor for simplicity's sake, and it looks like artwork sitting in the ultra-sanitary engine bay. Smooth inner fenders and a custom firewall all blend together to make a seamless look and the charcoal gray engine is neatly installed in the middle without wiring or plumbing to get in the way. It roars to life easily and pulls with effortless ease to 6000 RPM, ripping through the gears of the Tremec 5-speed gearbox. The front suspension is comprised of a custom K-member with tubular A-arms and coil-over shocks, all managed by a rack-and-pinion steering system. Another pair of coil-overs suspend the 9-inch rear end, and there's a disc brake at all four corners. A custom fabricated Flowmaster exhaust system was coated to stay out of sight under the car, the same color as the engine, in fact, and the floors are finished with what appears to be spray-on bedliner material for durability. The stance is just right, allowing the car to nail corners without feeling ancient, and those 17-inch Boyd Coddington wheels lend the perfect high-tech touch to the build.
With just 26 miles on it, this Comet is incredibly fresh and ready show, win, and enjoy. If you've dreamed of owning a pro-built supercar, this is a fantastic opportunity. Call today!
