Inspirational 1966 Mercury Cyclone GT Pace Car Convertible

The next amazing classic up for grabs in our Fairfield showroom is this simply gorgeous 1966 Mercury Cyclone GT Pace Car 2 Door Convertible with Cardinal Red exterior paint and a white vinyl... interior. This example is a true factory “S Code” with a 390 cid V-8 engine under the hood and a C6 Merc-o-Matic heavy duty automatic transmission, a 3.25 rear end, dual exhaust, a factory fiberglass dual hood scoop hood, a power top and power brakes. As one of only 100 pace cars produced in 1966 (and one of 2,158 total ’66 Cyclone GT’s), this fantastic example is easily one of the most prestigious on today’s open market.

The VIN # 6H28S605216 on this 1966 Mercury Cyclone GT Convertible decodes as follows- 6= produced in 1966, H=manufactured in Lorain, Ohio, 28=the model is a Pace Car Convertible, S= equipped with a 390 V8 motor with 335 horsepower.

Completely Unrestored Besides New Paint/Decals in 1999

This 1966 Mercury Cyclone GT Pace Car Convertible was the sixth vehicle produced on April 22nd, 1966 in Lorain, Ohio and it sold new in Spokane, Washington. The 3rd lifetime owner took possession back in 2010 and he informs us that this highly desirable muscle car is a true survivor that’s been kept true its entire lifetime. It did receive an exterior respray back in 1999 (paint under hood, trunk, etc. is original) and the factory motor was rebuilt within the last 1,000 miles- otherwise, everything is 100% original from bumper to bumper.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that the 390 V-8 engine on this 1966 Mercury Cyclone GT Pace Car Convertible is factory rated at 335 horsepower, but the current owner stated that the engine is producing 385 horsepower at the rear wheels. While we cannot certify this statement, we can tell you that this amazing car drives like a dream with awesome acceleration, handling and stopping power at virtually any speed. The performance is simply incredible for a true survivor and we saw nothing on the open road that would give a serious collector pause.

In terms of its present condition, this 1966 Mercury Cyclone GT Pace Car 2 Door Convertible borders on like-new condition both inside and out with only the slightest of imperfections to be found. The body lines are absolutely gorgeous and you’ll find quality paint glistening among fantastic chrome and trim work. The white interior, dashboard and center console are also immaculate and the only real blemish you’ll find is in the trunk area- there are slight signs of wear on an otherwise near-perfect example.

Possibly the Most Original, Show-Stopping Example Anywhere

Overall, this 1966 Mercury Cyclone GT Pace Car 2 Door Convertible is one of the most original, show-stopping examples we’ve ever come across and the current asking price is likely far too conservative for such an amazing example. There is simply no way that this beautiful muscle car remains available more than a few days so come see it for yourself today!
