Description for Mercury Mercury 1950
After selling my exclusive vehicle business, I decided to once again offer top value, one-of-a-kind, classic, antique, and unique vehicles at reasonable prices. The exciting 1950 Mercury Mercuryoffered here is a prime example.
The most exotic model and design in Mercury’s history was the ‘James Dean’ 1949-1950. Styling was marked by the smooth yet bulky bathtub look and what a look it was….and is! Far too many were cut up inside and out. Nothing was left untouched. Aggressive people armed with cutting torches, lead and tons of candy-color paint destroyed far too many of these beautiful automobiles. This was the birth of the ‘lead sled.’ They were more than beautiful, just the way they left the factory. Styling and performance was second to none. A 1950 Mercury like this one was the pace car for the Indianapolis 500. Today, only a few ‘originals’ are left.
A BIT OF HISTORY
James Dean made this car famous when he drove it in the movie “Rebel Without A Cause.†It was a 1950 Mercury as seen in the framed photo of him driving it– I will include this photo with the car purchase.
EXTERIOR
This is not a restored automobile and not a trailer queen. It is an unaltered, highly original car. Nothing is missing on the exterior; all of the chrome, stainless steel trim, fender skirts, emblems, and ornaments are original and in good to excellent condition. Nothing has been added with one exception –there is a hand painted (not vinyl) pin stripe which runs down both sides and down the center of the hood. It was added as an accent circle around the original trunk emblem.
The burnished finish shows well and is the new craze for cars with a marginal finish. Some spend a lot of money and paint their cars to get this look. It adds appeal and drama to old collectible cars. This car does a nice job of marking its territory.
The doors are suicide and add so much to the car. They open and close easily without any door sag. All the windows open and close which is not common for these cars. The vent windows also open and close and fit properly.
The hood and trunk open and close correctly and fit as they should. The wheels, caps and beauty rings are original to the car. Wide whites add the final touch. There are dual side view mirrors; little things that mean a lot.Twin pipes out the back have a quiet rumble and they look nice.
INTERIOR
The interior is nice and very presentable. The seats are very comfortable and roomy, leaving plenty of room for six adults. There is not one tear in any of the seats or door panels. Even the headliner and sun-visors are original. The front interior light and dome light still work.
Factory options included are the radio and heater. The heater blower motor works. The most distinguishing feature for the 1950 Mercury was the dash. It was completely redesigned. This dash is in exceptional condition. You need to look twice to find any flaws. The steering wheel is also just as nice with no wear or cracks. The lighter has never been used. This car has factory turn signals, another factory option. The aluminum door kick plates are in very good condition.
ENGINE
The Ford Flathead, the hot-rod favorite forever! Even today these engines are sought after and modified in so many ways. This car has new points, plugs, wires, distributor and condenser. It has never been out of the car. The oil bath air cleaner was a factory option and this car has it! It starts quickly and idles smoothly. The oil has been changed using correct 30 weight. The correct filter is also new. Open the hood and show it off. It is detailed and nice to admire. The inner fenders are solid and clean.Nothing has been altered or missing.
The millionth Mercury was produced in 1950. These cars are timeless. The 1949-1950 cars are the most desirable of all Mercuries. Finding an ‘original’ is not easy. Suicide door sport sedans are few and far between. This is a wise investment. Beautiful in every way just as it left the factory.
This is a well-priced investment, an absolute value. This is a 30-day auction. It is a wise investment. It is offered with a sensible reserve and is available for thirty days.
