Description for Mercury Capri 1991

No Reserve!! 1991 Mercury Capri Convertible 1. 6L Engine. 5-speed Transmission Fun Car for Summer! Gas sipper: 26mpg HWY / 21mpg City This car has not been MD State Inspected. so it can only be sold to a non-Maryland resident. Please read the description fully and ensure that you can meet the obligations of this auction before bidding. As is stated above. this is a NO RESERVE auction for a 1991 Mercury Capri convertible. This fun. sleek little car is the more comfortable and practical cousin of the Miata. built by Ford Australia. but using many Mazda mechanical components. The 1. 6L DOHC Mazda 4-cylinder has ample power for this small car. and returns great gas mileage. It starts right up. and does not smoke. overheat or have blow-by. Oil pressure is good. There is a very slow oil leak that left a small spot on my driveway overnight. The clutch is strong. and the 5-speed manual transmission shifts up and down through all of its gears without any grinding. A new alternator was installed recently. I was told that the previous owner had the transmission rebuilt. but I have no receipts to prove it. The brakes feel good. The suspension feels average for the age and mileage. It is probably due for new bushings. and it feels like the passenger’s side may need a new ball joint in the front end. The driver’s side CV joint clicks when making a right turn. so that will likely need to be replaced in the future. The exterior of this car is actually in good shape for the age. The “futuristic” angular lines. pop-up lights and panel that cover the top give this car a very clean look that is different to most small convertibles. even today. It really stands out on the road. There is no rust that I can see. except for a small spot of surface rust on the edge of the panel that covers the convertible top when it is down. The paint. other than the expected little ding or chip. looks good. but could use a wax to bring the shine back out. The bumpers have faded a bit. and there is a “bleached” area on the panel that covers the top (pictured). but otherwise the body looks good. The tires all have good tread. and the top is in good condition. There is some wind noise around the driver’s window. but the top does not leak. The wipers and exterior lights all work. but the passenger’s side headlight does not go up. This is a common problem with these cars. and may be the motor or motor control unit. The grey interior is average for the age. and shows some wear and tear. The dash and door panels are in good shape. without any sun damage or cracks. This car has a rear seat that could theoretically fit 2 people. but it does work well for additional storage space. If you’ve ever owned a Miata or MR2 you know that quickly jumping into the car in the rain means having to stuff bags and belongings into the passenger’s footwell. if you don’t have a passenger. In the Mercury Capri there is plenty of space to toss things into the back seat. The front seats have a few tears in the fabric. but are still supportive. The carpets have some staining. but would clean up with a proper shampooing. This car has power windows and power mirrors. The heater works well. but the A/C does not feel cold. and the radio has been removed. There is a driver’s airbag for safety. All of the dash lights and gauges work. At highway speeds there is an occasional miss or hesitation when accelerating. When this happens the “check engine” light comes on and then goes off. I think that this is happening because the car sat unused over winter with the gas tank ¾ full. and that gas has gone bad. The car ran perfectly last summer. and since I topped up the tank with premium gas and added a bottle of gas treatment it has improved. but it may still need a proper tune-up to sort this problem out. The car does not stall or stop running. it just has an occasional “hiccup. ” This is a sleek. sporty. but economical little convertible that will be great for summer. If you like Miatas but don’t have the flexibility to get in and out of them. this is the car for you! I would class this as a “drive and restore” car. It is not in perfect condition. it has some faults and I have described all of the faults that I have found. While it does need some work. it is a good. solid base to start from. and you can drive and enjoy it while doing the work. This car is old enough to be registered as “historic” in most states. which means cheaper registration and insurance fees. and exemption from state inspections. It comes with two extensive diagnostic shop manuals from the previous owner.
